krudler Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 YAAAY my very first lid arrived in the post this morning, an ATA. perfect timing too as I'm out sick from work with a foot injury so this will keep me occupied now I have plenty of time to do it lol, its a really exciting feeling getting a big box with a white face gazing out at you when you open it Pics with my also arrived TK-4510 decals: Quote
Runnriottt Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 Wash that puppy and get to building! Whoo Hoo! Quote
krudler Posted September 8, 2009 Author Report Posted September 8, 2009 Ok so far today I've got the teeth and eyes cut out, its been years since I used a hobby knife so I went as slowly as I could, its not so far though, needs a bit of fine tuning, question about the eyes though should they be cut out as far as the mould grooves or just inside them? You can see the lines just outside where I've cut here, I was scared to go too far but looking online it seems to be right so I'll take another bit out, I was really surprised how easy the plastic is to cut, only bit I had some trouble with was the small corners of the teeth, they're looking ok though, for an utter newbie Also, what should it be washed with before painting? Quote
GosHawk[501st] Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 I would trim a bit more from the eyes, that's just my thought. http://forum.whitearmor.net/index.php?show...mp;#entry102223 that my build topic I have a pic of the my helm. As fa as washing, I heard dish soap and luke warm water does the trick Quote
TK-7828 Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 mmm cant wait for more pics...havent read much about the armor..is it ABS? cheers Quote
krudler Posted September 9, 2009 Author Report Posted September 9, 2009 Right the eyes, mouth and ears are cut, ears need trimming to fit properly but its going ok so far, the back part of the helmet, thats what I'm going to start next, hope I dont mess it up, does anyone have a link to a good tutorial on where to cut the lines on the cap n back? dont want to go too far Quote
krudler Posted September 9, 2009 Author Report Posted September 9, 2009 Progress pics, have the eyes, teeth and ears cut out, ears need refining, am about to start the cap n back, the pics below are where I marked it does this look right? Also does the underneath of the face need to be trimmed? it looks like theres a lot of excess plastic there, pic below: Quote
TK5144[TK] Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 Also does the underneath of the face need to be trimmed? it looks like theres a lot of excess plastic there, pic below: YES... i made the mistake of not triming intially, then had to go back and do it - it was hitting me right in the adam's apple! Quote
dougefresh Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 Yup-- you want to cut away all the lumpy stuff-- you should be able to follow along the mold line; it's pretty visible from the inside of the helmet if you have any doubt. The sides of the cap n' back get pretty wild and woolly, don't they? This kit seems to require a sense of adventure when trimming. Quote
GosHawk[501st] Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 Your lines on the cap look fine to me. Quote
krudler Posted September 10, 2009 Author Report Posted September 10, 2009 More progress, going to assemble and mount the ears today, hope I cut everything right: Quote
Slaveprobe[TK] Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 You're doing a good job. Maybe I'll cut the teeth a little more Quote
krudler Posted September 10, 2009 Author Report Posted September 10, 2009 Yet more progress, I've been having trouble getting the ears fitted, I think I either trimmed too much or not enough of the back of the lid so theres a gap also getting the bottom of them screwed into both the faceplate and the back is proving to be a bit of pain, I might have to sacrifice screen accuracy and use two bolts to hold in the bottom of the ears: ps excuse the mounds of masking tape have no clamps and only two hands so needed as much holding the helmet together as possible Quote
krudler Posted September 12, 2009 Author Report Posted September 12, 2009 Its assembled, lenses and mic tips are test fitted, painting begins tomorrow I'm not really happy with the gap between the ears but I'll live with it, might get some filler or try glue it down a bit Quote
GosHawk[501st] Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Nice work man! The gap looks fine, only thing I would do is possibly trim a bit more of the teeth. That's just me but if a admin or someone with more experience would comment that would be great. Quote
krudler Posted September 12, 2009 Author Report Posted September 12, 2009 Yeah I'm gonna trim the teeth out a bit more, just to make them a bit more smooth looking, dont think its going so bad for my first attempt at this Quote
krudler Posted September 13, 2009 Author Report Posted September 13, 2009 Started painting today, primer is on so will leave it a day before the gloss white goes on Quote
dougefresh Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 Looking sweet, Keith! Your thread, and several of the other ongoing ATA threads are definitely keeping me inspired and motivated. You guys are setting a pretty high bar! Definitely fun to follow along! Keep it up, dude! Quote
krudler Posted September 15, 2009 Author Report Posted September 15, 2009 This looking glossy enough? the light dulls it down a bit but it seems ok Quote
Rebel Doughboy[TK] Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 There is always Novus plastic polish that adds a fine finish. I used it on my Rebel Bucket and the results were pretty pleasing. Quote
krudler Posted September 16, 2009 Author Report Posted September 16, 2009 Another update pic, not really happy with the lack of gloss, its more satin finish than shiny like I wanted, might add more lacquer to it: Quote
krudler Posted September 16, 2009 Author Report Posted September 16, 2009 Added more lacquer, think it looks better now gloss wise Quote
