Woody Posted July 30 Author Report Posted July 30 (edited) Spent another 3 hours today on the ear caps. Looked at photos , took my time and this is as close as I was able to get. I was in contact with someone who sent the photos to the GML of the garrison I am looking to join and he said this was okay and stated like others that the movie helmets were not 100% perfect. Now that I got that okay I am going to do some sanding the clean it up a bit more and get ready for paint. Edited July 30 by Woody 1 Quote
Tilheyra[IPM] Posted July 30 Report Posted July 30 Nice! Must be relieving to have your GML's blessing on the ears! Quote
Woody Posted July 30 Author Report Posted July 30 Yes ! I almost had a stroke about 4 separate times doing them lol and I’m only 28. I’m going to clean it all up more but this is just a “rough”. Lol Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted July 30 Report Posted July 30 Well as long as your GML is happy, if you do want to revisit them at any time remember to close any gaps you need to sand the areas which are touching, also adding the notch to the top of the ear help them to sit flusher on the faceplate Quote
Woody Posted July 30 Author Report Posted July 30 I did the notch on top ! That helped alot! I have another set of ears , and down the road I plan or replacing these , but to initially get into the group, I am happy for now. This whole thing has been a huge learning curve. I’m hoping to join an armor party near me at some point and see if someone can help me really dial these in. But it is nice to know that for now this is okay. I know they aren’t perfect lol, but man did I try and put alot of time into em. Appreciate you guys following along and helping along the way! 1 Quote
ukswrath[Staff] Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 What I've seen over time is it's not so much the imperfections in the gaps between the ears and helmet, though keeping it to a minimum is optimum however, the ear thickness. They're almost always too excessive. Take another looks at the original helmet photos Glen posted. That said, if your GML is giving you the green light on what they look like now then you're golden. But if you're looking for screen accuracy then thinner is better. Keep up the good work 1 Quote
Woody Posted August 1 Author Report Posted August 1 Any links to tips about trimming the head home wider to fit a bigger head ? Having a hard time finding one, thanks ! Quote
JBar[TK] Posted August 1 Report Posted August 1 (edited) Not a tutorial quite but here is my final cut. It JUST barely fits my head and I've considered trimming it wider myself. See how it compares to yours Edited August 1 by JBar 1 Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted August 1 Report Posted August 1 Screen references Just remember you put the helmet on sideways until it's over your nose then twist straight. Also the bigger the opening the easier it is for younglings to look up and see your face 2 Quote
Woody Posted September 17 Author Report Posted September 17 Been awhile. These last two months have been hectic, finally got back on the horse a few days ago and plan on going steady every day I am off work. Putting the helmet on hold as I wait for things to come in the mail. i have trimmed my biceps, forearms and started my abdomen. These will all be sanded again. I took off all the return edge on the wrist of the forearms. I am going to finish taking the return edge off the shoulder bells. I left some return edge on the biceps. My question is are the inside of the forearms supposed to look different or trimmed to the same “u” shape. I have them trimmed to where the flash was. Also, the bottom cod piece of very bland and no hard lines to see where to exactly shape it too, I have a rough pencil marking for now but curious any tips or tricks. As always thanks for all and any feed back! Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 My question is are the inside of the forearms supposed to look different or trimmed to the same “u” shape. I have them trimmed to where the flash was. Normally the right and left sides are a different shape/size, same as screen suits Also, the bottom cod piece of very bland and no hard lines to see where to exactly shape it too, I have a rough pencil marking for now but curious any tips or tricks. Trim line looks fine Bicep with the thumb print goes on the left arm NOTES ON BICEPS: In the original films, many of the biceps had an indentation, or "thumbprint" (normally worn only on the left) on the inside. As the biceps are interchangeable, this is not a requirement for any level. You can take off all the return edge on the shoulder bells if you wish too Swoop on the shoulder bells goes to the front Note: For ANH S/H and ESB as mentioned in the CRL for basic approval, shoulder bells are interchangeable. However, note that many (but not all of) the originals contained a "swoop" (slight curvature on one side) at the bottoms, which should ideally face the front. Some armor makers have incorporated this detail into their molds, but some have not and many times troopers get them backward. This is not a requirement at any level. <--- Front References to other WTF forearm builds Found from searching that the left forearms have a slight curve to it while the right is more straight Left Wrist Left Elbow Sorry if I've missed anything. 2 Quote
Woody Posted September 17 Author Report Posted September 17 Thanks for the feed back glen! I will be getting back at it in a day and will put what you said to work. So many suits and when looking at references , sometimes these small details are hard to see. Appreciate your help! 1 Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 Can't remember if I posted this link earlier, you may find it useful Quote

Woody Posted September 23 Author Report Posted September 23 (edited) Well another 6 hour day down , I am ready to start fitting all the big pieces. The past few days I’ve done nothing but trim the armor, today I wanted to change the pace and do something different. I installed the lenses , I used the ones that came with the kit. I forgot to take inside photos. But I mounted them to the top ear screw on the inside. I decided to rework my ears some more and for my first build , and spending hours on hours on them. I am content. I also laid down some paint , for not being an artist , and never doing this, I am pretty happy with how it came out. I still have details to do, and to paint the ear caps, but this is what I was able to accomplish today. Edited September 23 by Woody 1 Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted September 23 Report Posted September 23 Just watch any paint on the gums: For Basic approval and above, Frown is painted gray and does not leave the teeth area. Quote
Woody Posted September 23 Author Report Posted September 23 So I see I can clean up that front tooth, but do the others look better at this angle ? Not sure if that angle of that other photo made a difference, thank you! Quote

Woody Posted September 25 Author Report Posted September 25 I got some more painting done today. I outlined the stuff I had previous just rough painted , and cleaned up the teeth as glen suggested. Next are tube stripes and the fine black lines in the grey areas. I was on trooper bay and have the tube stencils down to “ standard” and “hand painted” does anyone know what ones are used for a new hope stunt? Thanks for your time and any input as always! 2 Quote
