E11 power cylinder templates wanted

I also just made mine off that templet, I used some copper tubing from Lowes Home improvement,Lowes has the correct size Home depot doesn't. They have copper caps as well that I cut down and some small nuts and bolts from local hobby store. The holder I made out of some thin sheet metal, tin snips and CA Glue!!

They look pretty good!!

I'm in the middle of a sterling demill and I thought AL did such a fine job on this I copied his

design so perfectly you won't be able to tell the difference between his and mine.

I don't know if anyone knows the TRUE origins of the cylinders that mount on top of the magazine well, but I would love to hear it if you know!

 

 

I did some research and discovered a few images of the cylinders I was trying to identify, in case anyone else has a brainstorm, or knows vacuum tube amplifiers from the 60s and 70s:

 

 

The ones from the top of the Landspeeder, shown below also, are the same:

I actually made a pretty decent breakthrough while emailing with Paul Harrison from Elstree Studios, London (One of the men who worked on building the Landspeeders and Mouse Droids for ANH).

 

 

Here is what he had to say:

 

 

Hi,

 

We built the originals but the art department did a lot of the dressing up. Most greeblie parts came from Elstree Electrical, which was an old store on the high street that had old oscilloscopes, valve radios etc.

 

But those parts I think were just spark plugs with the porcelain knocked off with tender tap from a hammer! We helped John Stears on the mouse droids too, we had it running around the workshop, based on a Datsun 280 RC sports car from what I remember. I think it was old valves on there. Most glass bits were broken off as we knew they wouldnt survive shipping, it was easier to remove them and repaint.

Hi Vern, been reading this with a lot of interest, the axle caps? I seem to only be able to see the top hat variety, was this what you worked with and if so how do you go about trimming the rim, is it pretty easy to do?

Actually I have another question and that is about the top where there appears to be a cut out circular section. From the MSE pictures above it looks like these are where the valve tube holders would have been does anyone have any idea as to what diameter these would have been (are they standard for all valve tubes or did they differ)?

there is a notch on the edge of the cap that the wheel fit's into and it takes about 10 minutes to cut 4 caps

drilling them out for the screws in front is very tough to do.

 

I usually order a pair from sean at 35$ it's not a bad deal for saving the headache!

Yes this is the template we came up with a few years back. Before these there was nothing around to make the power cylinders with ease.

I have finally started making these.

 

after some wonderful work that troopers have done, I put together this pair

 

today for a blaster build I'm working on.

 

I'm working hard to make more of these!

Vern thank for the Idea with 3/8 size aux caps.Seemed at first impossible  to find every  home depo and lowes was out of them, but finally found at ACE. They worked perfectly
