Hey all,

Figured I'd try to help put the hive mind to work and benefit from your knowledge of you're willing! I'm looking for the optimal solution for setting snaps at a high volume, in an ergonomic method. I've found a few things but am unsure if they'd serve my purpose of setting a large amount of Line 24, specifically, but hopefully many types of snaps and grommets. I've been using a pair of the purple-handled Dritz ones for a while, and honestly they're the best consistently so far, but the plastic bits at the ends are a weak point and do wear out and crack pretty quick.

I got a pair of the snap-lock plier type, but mine tend to smash the head of the cap flat a bit and they don't snap crisply.

Something with an overhead pull, like a bottle corker/capper and/or bench mounted could be cool.

Anyone have suggestions or have a product or tool that they like? Let me know! :)

Hammer, philips head screwdriver to help split the post, then standard setting tool works for me.

I used these on my build: https://amzn.to/355YdSu

I am confident I could do 5 perfectly in the same time it takes to do 1 with a hammer.  I've not tested them with non prym snaps though, but I would expect them to work with any snap so long as it's not larger than 15mm.

A couple of other troopers recommended this snap setting tool.  Worked great for me.  Granted purchasing extra dies for snaps and grommets may get pricey.

If you are looking at high volume snap plates, I made this jig that worked pretty well.  You may need to scroll up a bit to the actual post.  For some reason the link doesn't seem to go directly to it.  At least in my browser.

I was tempted, but the price held me back...

Yeaaaaaaa, the ONE time my apartment neighbors finally complained about my costuming was after setting about 60 snaps with a hammer. Apparently the shared floor transmits banging too well for this to be a realistic option for volume, even IF it was efficient.

Yup, the purple Dritz ones I referenced are very similar, and these definitely aren't the worst... but I think we can find better!

This is much closer to what I'm looking for! But yea, I don't see Line 24 snaps listed under the available dies, and that would be key to ensuring this works... Maybe y'all can help me find something similar?!

Piece of wood on a rubber mat can make a difference.

I still don't think it would be an ergonomic or efficient method for the volume I'd potentially be looking to do, even if that did help :( I think @Dielotski is closer to the mark of what I'm looking for here, but I'm open to stuff I haven't seen or tried before as well!

It took me a while to find them too.   It is in that drop down list labeled "Die Set for Ring Snaps 24 Ligne/15mm (5/8")" or "Die Set for Spring Snaps 24 Ligne/15mm (5/8")" depending on which type of snaps you have.

I used these pliers from prym similar to the ones @themaninthesuitcase has, but they have the same issue as your Dritz ones with the plastic bits on the tips breaking out sooner or later.
I might print some replacement bits for them with my 3D-printer, though. :D

But it shouldn't be that hard to modify an eyelet press like this one to use it for snaps:

I use the same. Actually, I think I bought it off your recommendation

I’ve used it with both Prymm eyelets and sports/camping snaps, as well as some cheaper snaps from the local hardware store.

I'm with Glen here except for splitting the post. I've been using the same $5 setter and anvil for years now without  any issues.

Same here.

If I could one more detail when setting snaps using the setter and anvil, use it on a hard flat surface, the harder the better if possible. I typically use the concrete floor in my garage for snaps that will be used in areas I'm not too concerned with scratches, a jaw vise mounted on my work bench or a flat Teflon plate for more delicate areas.

Just wanted to let y'all know that I ended up going with this bad boy for $134.66 off Amazon, including 720 black Line 24 snaps and a hole punch tool. It arrived very quick and I am VERY pleased with it so far. We'll see how it does for scaled production once I bolt it to my workbench shortly... MAYBE ;)

Just catching up on this old thread, Justin. You expanding/reviving your RascalSnaps offering? Funny, I still have the ones I got from you waiting for installation in my kit. How has that press ended up working for you?
