Th3DarKn1ght Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 Hey guys, BBB day today! Started with a phone call from Fedex saying they couldn't find my address, even though they've delivered here plenty of other times. But after a few more phone calls I got it squared away and it's here! I've opened it up and everything seems to be ok, no cracks or anything, so that's definitely a relief. Not gonna lie, I'm feeling kind of overwhelmed looking at it all, but I guess that's to be expected. I've still got to order the gloves and boots, but I was just waiting until this got here to get anything else. I'm going to get off here and go give everything a wash and try to organize my thoughts lol. I'm looking forward to this journey! It will take me a long time, I have no doubt, since I'm a college student and have just under a month before I go back until probably December. But I want to get as much done now as I can. Thank you in advance to everyone who helps me along the way! 4 Quote
DarthBiscuit[TK] Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 Awesome, congrats! I'll follow along with you, as I haven't started on the armor yet, but am almost done with the helmet! Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted July 13, 2020 Report Posted July 13, 2020 Oh happy days, noting better than BBB's, looking forward to seeing your build, good luck Quote
Th3DarKn1ght Posted July 15, 2020 Author Report Posted July 15, 2020 After further consideration and reading the July newsletter, I think I will just try to go for Centurion level from the start. It will take longer than it would if I was just going for the basic approval level, and will involve a lot more work/supplies/stuff in general, but it’s going to be a long time before I’ll have the time to finish anyway, with me going back to school in about a month. So why not? I want it to be the best looking that it can be, so reach for the stars! On another note, I already have some of the supplies I need (ex: Dremel tool), but they’re at my dad’s house. The first thing I want to get to work on is the helmet, bc when I come home for Christmas break I want to be reminded of why I started this journey in the first place. So, I’ll be taking a trip up to his place this weekend. In the meantime I’m going to go get another tarp and some Scotchbrite pads tomorrow, bc turns out I didn’t have any here. 1 Quote
Th3DarKn1ght Posted July 19, 2020 Author Report Posted July 19, 2020 (edited) Alright, using the Dremel tool at my dad’s today. I was gonna start on the helmet yesterday, but it was waaay too hot. Not much better today, but it’s only gonna get hotter the rest of the week, or rain. Here’s my progress so far. I’ve only done the right side. The dremel bit I’m using might be just barely too big to go through all the way on this bottom section, and definitely will be too large for the top, so off to Lowe’s to get a smaller bit and some hand files. Thanks for watching. Edited July 19, 2020 by Th3DarKn1ght 2 Quote
DarthBiscuit[TK] Posted July 19, 2020 Report Posted July 19, 2020 Good start! Can you post pics of your bit? I used a cutting wheel, but it couldn't get too deep without nicking the edges. You have some good rectangles going there! Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted July 19, 2020 Report Posted July 19, 2020 The smaller the bit the more control. Nothing worse than the bit grabbing and taking a chunk out of the side. This is what I normally use but managed to fine a finer one just recently which I've not tried as yet. 2 Quote
DarthBiscuit[TK] Posted July 19, 2020 Report Posted July 19, 2020 I used this cutting wheel. I was a pain! Either its diameter was too big to fit, or too small and the Dremel couldn't get close enough. Small files helped tidy it all up though! 1 Quote
Th3DarKn1ght Posted July 19, 2020 Author Report Posted July 19, 2020 Alright so this is the bit I used first. They didn’t have a lot of options at the Lowes near me, but I did manage to pick up a cutting bit and also the same wheel you used DarthBiscuit. After some filing, it turned out pretty good for the time I had left today. I did however nick the top of the 7th one (forgot what they’re called), so that’s not good. Not entirely sure how I’m gonna fix that, but I’ll cross that bridge, along with any other mistakes I make in this stage, when I get there. Any advice would be nice. Thanks 2 Quote
Th3DarKn1ght Posted July 19, 2020 Author Report Posted July 19, 2020 Here’s the first bit I used. Quote
DarthBiscuit[TK] Posted July 19, 2020 Report Posted July 19, 2020 I used some spot putty for those nicks, then filed and sanded so they somewhat blended in. Turns out barely noticeable 1 Quote
Th3DarKn1ght Posted July 20, 2020 Author Report Posted July 20, 2020 Today I’ve cut out the other side and then filed each to be about as rectangley as I can get them. The traps are long enough to where I should be able to use that diamond wheel cutter pictured above, but it’s just barely too long to use on the tears. I might try the other cutter, I’m just afraid I’ll nick the sides way too much. That first bit I used is too large to fit in the trap/tears unfortunately. Depending on how easy the traps are or not, I might go by Home Depot tonight and see if they have any other small bits. Thanks 2 Quote
DarthBiscuit[TK] Posted July 20, 2020 Report Posted July 20, 2020 It was definitely tricky getting the cutting wheel into the tears, but I was able to get them each started with it. Then I cut some rough sandpaper into thin strips and went back and forth to open it up, until I could fit a file in... 1 Quote
Th3DarKn1ght Posted July 20, 2020 Author Report Posted July 20, 2020 I only have enough time left today to rough cut the traps, I’ll try and finish them up tomorrow. Right and left. Thanks for the input about the sandpaper DarthBiscuit. 1 Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted July 20, 2020 Report Posted July 20, 2020 You can also cover a thin piece of metal in sandpaper and tape together, helps to keep the sandpaper straight and also to get into fine areas rather than just holding. Quote
DarthBiscuit[TK] Posted July 20, 2020 Report Posted July 20, 2020 I grabbed the part of the sandpaper strip inside and the part outside, then filed back and forth. The strips ripped a lot! But yeah, listen to gmrhodes13 ;-) 1 Quote
Th3DarKn1ght Posted July 21, 2020 Author Report Posted July 21, 2020 Hey guys, update for today. I was able to cut out the tears and teeth, and file the teeth. I think they turned out pretty good! The far right one might be a hair larger than the left, but I’ll look at it again later. I started sanding the grooves in the back left trap and man is it a tight fit! Slow progress is still progress though. I wish that I could finish the left one today, but I’ve got to be somewhere in an hour, so it looks like that’s it for now. Thanks 2 Quote
11b30b4[TK] Posted July 24, 2020 Report Posted July 24, 2020 Th3DarKn1ght, keep up the good work. Anytime its seems overwhelming, just pick one part to work on till its done then move on to the next thing. I had a devil of a time working on my kit and about 1/2 way through, I rushed the end so I could get approved and included in a racing shirt run. Whatever work you can do, is fine as long as you keep working. I have seen a lot of people start kits then put them aside for whatever reason and never pick them back up. I have added you to the roster. 2 Quote

Trying to get as much done on the helmet before I go off back to school in like 2 weeks, bc I probably won’t get another chance until Thanksgiving. And this week has been taken up by my summer class, so yeah. I’ve started too many things and stopped them shortly after, but I will not do it with this, no matter how long it takes! Thanks for the encouragement 2 Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted July 24, 2020 Report Posted July 24, 2020 Just don't rush the painting, sometimes it's better to leave a project to dry properly rather than rushing and having issue with paint reacting when not dry enough, I've ran into this a few times 2 Quote
Th3DarKn1ght Posted January 5, 2021 Author Report Posted January 5, 2021 Update: I have not died nor have I forgotten about this, even though it seems like it. I’ve just been busier with the holidays and other, more pressing things than I was expecting. Also it’s difficult to work on anything substantial at my mom’s apartment since there’s not much space at all, inside or outdoors. I go back to school on Jan 14. We’re going back later than normal, so I won’t have a spring break. In other words, the next time I’ll be able to begin working on this is May... Ugh. That’s it for now, just giving a quick update with where I am irl and why this page hasn’t been updated in some time. 1 Quote
Sly11[Admin] Posted January 6, 2021 Report Posted January 6, 2021 Glad to hear you are alright Perry, the detachment isn't going anywhere so we shall see you again when possible. Quote
