So Dan, the issue you are having is called paint fry, and there are a few reasons why this could have happened.

1. You got a bad batch of paint, yeah sometimes that happens.

2. The undercoat was still de-gassing when you applied the top coat and caused the reaction to occur. Even if you leave it a few days this can still occur with some paints and the de-gassing process changes time with ambient temperature.

3. it is simply a reaction between the top coat and undercoat or undercoat and primer when the top coat was applied.

Unfortunately the only way to fully fix it is to strip the helmet back and re start the process.

you could try and sand it back lightly then hit it with the old wet n dry and try and reapply the top coat in the hopes it doesn't Fry again.

 

Its just a minor set back so push on as this will be a spectacular helmet once completed.

Wow, thanks for the information, Andrew. I had no idea paint could be so complex!

Before applying this latest gloss coat I did lightly sand some of the worst affected areas - this certainly helped to smooth it out a little. Now, the top coat is much more even and the appearance is better. Very few obvious pimples now.

Could be a paint reaction too, some paints don't play well in certain orders and the paint will react.  Generally I always try run a test piece when using new paints or layering using differing brands I've not used before.

Hi troopers,

The fun continues with the hand painted details. To create the pinstripes I’m using the ‘black before grey’ method.

All the usual paint colours at this stage.

Good spot, Daniel. I’m going for a slightly different shape to that one, based on the below, however comparing the two it does need to extend up by a few mm. :-)

Looks amazing Dan, I'm inspired to give this a go myself (to some extent) as I have a bucket at home to be built verse my pre-delivered and constructed Anovos bucket that I just tweaked for approval.

Thanks Troy. I’d highly recommend it. It really gives it a lot of character and that ‘ANH’ feel. If nothing else, it’s a really good project. :-)

Hi folks,

Hand painted details now underway. My previous build I used templates for the trap and tear vertical lines - this time, I went totally freehand. Whilst I’ve got a little touching up to do, I’m really pleased with how they came out.

Vocoder tweaked a little, too. Thanks Daniel. :-)

Hello world,

A little more progress. This time, hovi tips.

The resin is typically yellow in appearance so a couple of coats of white were applied. Then, satin black. Fitting them to the lid really gives it extra character. :-)

Hi folks,

Another step closer today. Benefits of being up at 5:30 with the baby is getting a head start on things!! Lol

I used the Trooperbay Dave M style templates and a ‘special’ vintage shade of blue (thank you again, P).

I was a little nervous about applying the templates in case they damaged the top coat / thankfully, they peeled off perfectly in the end.

Just one coat here, carefully applied, using the paint sparingly. As you’d expect, a little bleed here and there but nothing that a gently scrape with a cocktail stick/wooden toothpick wouldn’t fix.

Also, added the hovi tip mesh (although I don’t think this is overly accurate) and added the acetate lenses.

Apart from the s-trim for the neck, were pretty nearly there. Please feel free to comment on the hovi mesh.

Lightly and carefully applied just one coat of paint, trying to avoid too much pressure which could force bleed under the template;

Hi folks,

 

We are nearly there now. All construction and painting is complete. I’ve started applying some light weathering using an off cut from my s-trim. Hard to capture on camera but it’s currently looking like natural wear and tear.

 

There is one natural paint crack under the chin from applying the s-trim. At this stage, I don’t yet have the courage to add any more chips.
