CableGuy[TK] Posted July 21, 2019 Author Report Posted July 21, 2019 Hey Dan Sorry to hijack but this photo makes it look like "he" has mascara or had a very bad night sleep Haha!! That’s EXACTLY what happened!! 1 Quote
Sly11[Admin] Posted July 22, 2019 Report Posted July 22, 2019 So Dan, the issue you are having is called paint fry, and there are a few reasons why this could have happened. 1. You got a bad batch of paint, yeah sometimes that happens. 2. The undercoat was still de-gassing when you applied the top coat and caused the reaction to occur. Even if you leave it a few days this can still occur with some paints and the de-gassing process changes time with ambient temperature. 3. it is simply a reaction between the top coat and undercoat or undercoat and primer when the top coat was applied. Unfortunately the only way to fully fix it is to strip the helmet back and re start the process. you could try and sand it back lightly then hit it with the old wet n dry and try and reapply the top coat in the hopes it doesn't Fry again. Its just a minor set back so push on as this will be a spectacular helmet once completed. 1 Quote

Before applying this latest gloss coat I did lightly sand some of the worst affected areas - this certainly helped to smooth it out a little. Now, the top coat is much more even and the appearance is better. Very few obvious pimples now. Thanks again for the tips and advise. It’s always appreciated. :-) 1 Quote
themaninthesuitcase[Admin] Posted July 22, 2019 Report Posted July 22, 2019 Could be a paint reaction too, some paints don't play well in certain orders and the paint will react. Generally I always try run a test piece when using new paints or layering using differing brands I've not used before. 1 Quote
ukswrath[Staff] Posted July 22, 2019 Report Posted July 22, 2019 Paint fry, have to remember that term. Sounds like something that happens to your brain when you paint in a non vented area lol 2 Quote
CableGuy[TK] Posted July 23, 2019 Author Report Posted July 23, 2019 Hi troopers,The fun continues with the hand painted details. To create the pinstripes I’m using the ‘black before grey’ method. All the usual paint colours at this stage. More to come. :-) 2 Quote
TheSwede[TK] Posted July 23, 2019 Report Posted July 23, 2019 Looking good Dan You might consider "raising" those middle ones a tad though 2 Quote

I’m going for a slightly different shape to that one, based on the below, however comparing the two it does need to extend up by a few mm. :-)Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
CableGuy[TK] Posted July 24, 2019 Author Report Posted July 24, 2019 Progress so far: I think I’ll tweak the left tear and the vocoder. :-) **these are all different helmets I’m using for reference as I’m not following one specific lid. Just getting the feel of the originals. :-) 2 Quote
Manbehindthemask[TK] Posted July 25, 2019 Report Posted July 25, 2019 Very excited to see the finished product. This helmet is coming along beautifully! 1 Quote
TK20187[TK] Posted July 25, 2019 Report Posted July 25, 2019 Looks amazing Dan, I'm inspired to give this a go myself (to some extent) as I have a bucket at home to be built verse my pre-delivered and constructed Anovos bucket that I just tweaked for approval. 1 Quote

Thanks Troy. I’d highly recommend it. It really gives it a lot of character and that ‘ANH’ feel. If nothing else, it’s a really good project. :-) 1 Quote
CableGuy[TK] Posted July 26, 2019 Author Report Posted July 26, 2019 Hi folks,Hand painted details now underway. My previous build I used templates for the trap and tear vertical lines - this time, I went totally freehand. Whilst I’ve got a little touching up to do, I’m really pleased with how they came out. Vocoder tweaked a little, too. Thanks Daniel. :-)Please excuse the lighting - it’s not actually yellow in the flesh. 3 Quote
Harbinger[IPM] Posted July 26, 2019 Report Posted July 26, 2019 Looks good to me. I expect a full on prop-replication of a full ANH ensemble next, real M38 and all. 1 Quote

I’m considering trooping it when it’s done and weathering my armour a little. We’ll see how things go. :-) Quote
Sly11[Admin] Posted July 26, 2019 Report Posted July 26, 2019 This must be so satisfying to build, i know it's been immensely satisfying watching it come together. Almost there Dan, remarkable work. 2 Quote
CableGuy[TK] Posted July 31, 2019 Author Report Posted July 31, 2019 Hello world,A little more progress. This time, hovi tips. The resin is typically yellow in appearance so a couple of coats of white were applied. Then, satin black. Fitting them to the lid really gives it extra character. :-)Next up - tubestripes. :-) 3 Quote
CableGuy[TK] Posted August 3, 2019 Author Report Posted August 3, 2019 Hi folks,Another step closer today. Benefits of being up at 5:30 with the baby is getting a head start on things!! LolI used the Trooperbay Dave M style templates and a ‘special’ vintage shade of blue (thank you again, P). I was a little nervous about applying the templates in case they damaged the top coat / thankfully, they peeled off perfectly in the end. Just one coat here, carefully applied, using the paint sparingly. As you’d expect, a little bleed here and there but nothing that a gently scrape with a cocktail stick/wooden toothpick wouldn’t fix. Also, added the hovi tip mesh (although I don’t think this is overly accurate) and added the acetate lenses. Apart from the s-trim for the neck, were pretty nearly there. Please feel free to comment on the hovi mesh. Note the orientation of the stripes - see here for more information; https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/44755-tube-stripes-anh-stunt-dave-m/Tubestripes approx a pencil width from the cheeks. Lightly and carefully applied just one coat of paint, trying to avoid too much pressure which could force bleed under the template;Pre-toothpick Post-toothpick 5 Quote

CableGuy[TK] Posted August 7, 2019 Author Report Posted August 7, 2019 Hi folks, We are nearly there now. All construction and painting is complete. I’ve started applying some light weathering using an off cut from my s-trim. Hard to capture on camera but it’s currently looking like natural wear and tear. There is one natural paint crack under the chin from applying the s-trim. At this stage, I don’t yet have the courage to add any more chips. 3 Quote
wook1138[TK] Posted August 7, 2019 Report Posted August 7, 2019 Impressive. Most impressive. I sure like the look of a painted bucket. 1 Quote
