Tolo[TK] Posted December 17, 2017 Report Posted December 17, 2017 As what I've heard, The Last Jedi is 50/50. So who likes it? Who doesn't? I for one, enjoyed it. 3 points I did not like: Too much comedy, Rose and Finn's trip and last but no least, Superman/Peter Pan Leia. Quote
Daetrin[Admin] Posted December 17, 2017 Report Posted December 17, 2017 I can see how people don't like it the first time, I suggest re-watching it. My good garrison-mate Sandeman summed up the below on FB, and his notes below sum up how I feel. Personally I think it's one of the best SW movies done to date. Is it the same "fun" as TFA? No, it's different because it needs to be, and that's not bad. // After 48 hours of digesting the movie, I saw it again today... And it was a different experience. The humor never bothered me, but it seemed more subtle. I picked up on things that I had not missed, but didn't correlate, such as: The dark kelp hole - like the cave on Dagobah, it only contains what one takes with them. Yoda - the entire idea of the movie was in his words. Crait - the clue is in the footprints. To sum up my feelings; my initial assessment was it wasn't what I wanted to see, but after a second viewing, it was the story that needed to be told. It was diffent and didn't play to the expected tropes, and I think that's what bothers most people, but it didn't have to play by my rules. The Force Awakens hit the wickets because it had to. It had to be different from the prequels by being the same as A New Hope (which some call derivitive). The Last Jedi had to be different also, and Rian Johnson took that idea and didn't remake The Empire Strikes Back. He did his own thing, a much more introspective thing. While I still don't agree with some of his choices, I don't have to. I get the message. I've made colossal mistakes while trying to do what I thought was right, and every main character in this movie is a victim of their own hubris. I think it helped that I watched Empire last night and saw the paralles from Luke's time on Dagobah. It's actually a pretty good entry to the saga, even if it's not the movie we've all made in our heads. 3 Quote
Nytetrain Posted December 17, 2017 Report Posted December 17, 2017 I loved all of it. Saw it yesterday... will probably go see it again. Quote
PGHtrooper21 Posted December 17, 2017 Report Posted December 17, 2017 (edited) I saw TLJ Yesterday Afternoon in 3D. It was a mix bag. It was better than TFA. I did not care for a remake of ESB and ROTJ. A Chase, Ice planet with walkers going to destroy the base. An Apprentice killing his master. A Mining Planet. Here are some things I did not agree with about TLJ. 1. How can bb8's dome stays on when Poe is going full force against the Dreadnought while his dome comes off in an explosion in the Star Destroyer? 2. How can you drop bombs in Space? The Tie Bomber shot them out in ESB. 3. How could Leia survive the explosion and outer space? 4. What Jedi training did Leia receive under Luke? Is she a Jedi? 5. Why Kill off Snooke? Build him up and done, 6. How did Snooke not feel Kylo moving the Light Saber? 7. The 2 Code Breakers which one was the real breaker? 8. What happened to the one that betrayed Rose and Finn? 9. Tracking through Hyperspace? Should that have been explained at the end of Rogue One? How did Darth Vader track The Rebel Blockade Runner to Tattoine? 10. Explaining that Rey's parents were dunks was weak for her parents background? 11. How did Phasama escape? Is her character done? 12. How could Fin survive heading into the cannon at the end? 13. bb-9E? I thought that there would be more scenes with him in it? 14. How are they going to write out Leia in IX? 15. Too many subplots. As someone who has seen the Original Star Wars in 1977, Empire in 1980 and Jedi in 1983, It is very disappointing to wait 34 years to see Star Wars and then to see Han, Luke and Leia not together again and die off! I have said this before. George should have taken a page from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, and filmed VII, VIII and IX at one time and did it they way he wanted it as he told Mark Hammell, In Episode IX he hands his lightsaber to someone else. I hope that George releases VII, VIII and IX as novels so that we can see what he wanted. I was hoping that VII, VIII, IX would have been about tying up what happened from Jedi to now. Add some characters then after IX, Go from there. Edited December 17, 2017 by PGHtrooper21 2 Quote
tkrestonva[TK] Posted December 17, 2017 Report Posted December 17, 2017 After seeing it twice (I *really* needed that second viewing to get past my 'WTF was THAT all about?!?" moments in the first viewing), I'm still sort of "meh" on it. In addition to the details that Andy listed (nearly all of which I agree with), I think it was *too* much of a departure from the OT and even from TFA. I get and support that the torch needs to be passed and new directions need to be taken, but if TFA played it too safe then TLJ played it too loosely. There should be a way to move the franchise forward without burning down all that brought you to where you currently stand. Basically respect your past, but don't be confined by it. On the plus side, I now think that Rian Johnson is exactly the right guy to create an entirely new trilogy that is unconnected to the OT, PT, and New Trilogy. I just wish he had saved the "forget the past - kill it if you have to" approach for his new trilogy. Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted December 18, 2017 Report Posted December 18, 2017 Too many holes, too much comedy, especially the Hux on hold scene, 1.5 seconds of executioners, see more of them in the trailers. But at least I found the answer for dropping bombs in space Be nice if we could get the other 30 minutes added to the movie, might make a lot more sense then 1 Quote
Harbinger[IPM] Posted December 18, 2017 Report Posted December 18, 2017 Another “meh”. Felt a bit like big-budget fan fiction. More and more curious to see what Lucas had intended for the sequel trilogy. Also... felt like Rian didn’t like where J.J. was going to take this trilogy and pivoted (Luke tossing his saber, killing Snoke, gutting The Resistance, etc.). Quote

Malace Posted December 18, 2017 Report Posted December 18, 2017 Saw the movie Fri. and Loved it!!! I'm also a kid from the 70's who saw the originals back in the day and still to this day my hair stands on end with the 20th century fox drumroll or the lucasfilm logo. I may not agree with some of the choices in these movies at times but thats why I'm just along for the ride and not directing. The most Important thing to me is they are making Star Wars movies againPretty much every year now...so I will be handing my money over to Disney every year they decide to bring another movie out. Can't wait to see where they take us next in this awesome Galaxy far, far away.... Quote
Eynonz Posted December 18, 2017 Report Posted December 18, 2017 Ackbar didn't get the send off he deserved. He should've replaced Holdo and sacrificed himself to save the rebellion in epic fashion. Not just flew out the window, "Oh yeah by the way, Ackbar just died, oh well". Goodbye my Fishy friend 5 Quote
mgb1016[501st] Posted December 18, 2017 Report Posted December 18, 2017 After going to the premiere Thursday night, I was undecided. I went back Friday afternoon, and loved it. I can certainly understand why it's caused so much backlash, what happens in this one is so shocking and unexpected, and so many twists and turns, it's hard to take it all in at once. I didn't think the humor was over the top. I personally liked the opening with Hux and Poe, Hux (not one of my favorite characters) totally being dismissed as a threat was hilarious. Say what you want about the porgs, I loved them as soon as I saw them in the D23 footage, and I loved them in the movie. I don't think they overshadowed anything. I also love that Snoke was taken out like a punk lol (go Supreme Leader Ren!!!) I was a little disappointed that there was no confrontation between Leia and Kylo, and no further mention of the Knights of Ren, but everything else made up for it IMO. I believe Phasma survived that fall and will be back. The fight between her and Finn, though brief, was awesome and I like how it showed part of Gwendoline's face after Finn whacks her with the riot baton. And of course everyone's devastated about Luke, but you know he'll be back as a Force ghost in the next movie, just like Obi-Wan was brought back as one in ESB and ROTJ. TLJ isn't the best of the saga, but it's certainly not the worst. 1 Quote

AngryEwok[501st] Posted December 19, 2017 Report Posted December 19, 2017 Pretty meh. Loved the bomber sequence. Hated the entire casino plot. Loved Kylo and Rey being force connected. Hated Luke’s death. Loved the idea of a mutiny in the Resistance. Hated the execution of the idea. Loved that there wasn’t a Death Star. Hated that we didn’t see Ackbar but apparently he died? Quote
Addertime[TK] Posted December 21, 2017 Report Posted December 21, 2017 I liked the film overall. I was entertained and I like the character development of Rey and Kylo. I felt it was a fitting ESB 2.0 to accompany TFA which I saw as ANH for a new generation. Even though the plot has more holes than a screen door at least the Porgs weren't the new JarJar like I feared. That said, I agree with most of PGHTrooper21's list above. There were a lot of odd questions and that remained and odd moments which didn't need to happen. It's felt sloppy. There was a moment where Poe put his foot through the floorboard of the V-4X-D speeder and said, "What the hell?!?" and I was thinking, "...said no one in the Star Wars universe... ever." The concept of heaven and hell has never been introduced in Star Wars so this exclamation made zero sense. The bombers dropping bombs in space was sheer comedy and the lack of explanation about the codebreaker guy was unacceptable. I felt it supposed to be obvious that the "real" codebreaker was the guy the met in the prison cell who was just Lando 2.0 but it could have been so much better. I've thought about it and I would've liked to have seen Billy Dee Williams revisit the Lando role for this part. It would have been nice to revisit another aging character we all know and show that, though he became a good guy, he still couldn't change his spots and betrayed them again in his own opportunistic way. It was too perfect and they missed it. Quote
jethroskull[501st] Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 I thought Laura Dern totally stole it... not a bad thing. I'm in agreement with much of the "meh," but also in agreement that another viewing would be good (thought that before it even ended). The one thing that irked me in both VII and VIII was Snoke. Why did they have to bring in a complete unknown with zero history? Some "force sensitive who saw both the rise and fall of the Empire?" Sure, and just happened to have the resources and insider knowledge to pull the stragglers together, build a massive fleet and army, and essentially take over the known universe... There were plenty of existing background characters in the SW realm who could have realistically taken those reins. Overall, though, I didn't want that part of my life back. It was fun enough. Quote
Harbinger[IPM] Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 But... but... Ezra is Snoke! Quote
Big Deal Posted December 27, 2017 Report Posted December 27, 2017 That’s probably my biggest beef, the Snoke thing and Rey’s parents. To dangle these two plot points for almost three years and then turn them into nothing is really weak. IMHO. Maybe more will be explained, the stage was set for a great part three. I just hope it doesn’t start at some jungle rebel base where all these mysterious supporters gather together for a final show down with new ships. Quote

Actually, in Empire Strikes Back, when Han Solo is getting on his tauntaun and the deck officer tells him it'll freeze before he reaches the first marker, he says, "Then I'll see you in hell!" But I agree 100% there were many, many wasted opportunities in TLJ particularly in not introducing Lando Calrissian. He could have been 'the gambler' and tried to conduct a refueling mission, failed, but ended up being the senior officer rather than the random blue hair lady who, somehow, outranked Admiral Ackbar. Lando and Poe would have had ridiculously awesome chemistry, me thinks. Edited December 27, 2017 by AngryEwok 1 Quote

Pretzel Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 Personally, the film had its moments of WTF just happened!? and WHY did it happen? I was entertained. I enjoyed the movie. It had its good and bad moments. But it is up there at the all time greats! I see negativity in a lot of other areas about the movie, and most of you summed up the reason to why. Because people have their own theories. I personally didn't let any of my theories get in the way of what the outcome was. Because of that, I was entertained and thrilled with the movie. Yes, Lots of characters died. Ackbar did not deserve the death he got. Just flew out the window? C'mon. Luke & Phasma's death is what I expected. Snoke WAS WAAAAAY unexpected. But I actually liked that it was. My own theory.. I think he transferred his force energy into another living soul. I do not see him going down the way he did so easily. Unless Kylo is that MUCH more powerful to manipulate snoke's mind. I can go on and on.. but a solid 7/10 from me. Quote
Thumpy~[501st] Posted December 30, 2017 Report Posted December 30, 2017 As a #2 in this SW trilogy, I walked out of the theatre (2x) a bit more satisfied compared to my experience in TFA. I rewatched TFA a few days ago, and I have an improved appreciation for it. My 11-year old daughter loves the new SW, so why fight it? 1 Quote
