Well after a lot of reading and research both on here and the UKG I finally took the plunge, well read that as I've dipped my toe in the water, what I mean is I've ordered and now received an ABS ANH lid from RS propmasters :)

It's in kit form so I need to cut our the eyes and teeth, fit the ears and the thing that's worrying me most, paint the tubes, well that will come later.

I'm thinking if I can do the lid then hopefully, and that's a big hopefully for a small guy, I may be able to trim and put together the armour. Crickets build in here has been an inspiration, thanks

I'm so pleased that I went with RS, they are a northern business in Manchester which is only 20 miles from me, so it's good to support local businesses. I must admit I was blown away, in a good way when I opened the box on Christmas Day, yes the lid is wonky , yes it's bumpy and yes it's awsome :), I am well chuffed with it and can't wait to get the armour, but first things first, I need to build my lid :)

This is the pic I took after opening the box, hopefully it will work

The next pics I have pencilled in where I think I should cut the teeth out and the eyes, the second pic has two lines on it at the top, I'm not too sure whether to cut the top or bottom line, your thoughts are appreciated :)

I intend to drill some small hole some in the teeth and eyes with a hand drill and then cut them out with an x-acto knife, I will post some WIP pics . The guys on the UKG have been kind enough to tell me what colour humbrol paint to get for the lid, so that will be my next purchase.

I would like to say thank you to all members on here, especially those who have taken the time to pull together how to threads, WIP threads and instructional videos plus the do's and don'ts when it comes to purchasing your TK armour, you have all helped a complete novice to take the first step toward success becoming a member (hopefully) of the 501st, thank you all :)

Ok work has started today, drilled some 3mm holes in the eyes and big teeth and 2mm holes in the rest, now starting to cut it out, it's a slow job, one slip and I will have a toothless TK , so I will take my time, slowly, slowly catch the monkey as they say

How is this looking, do I need to take out a bit more top and bottom ? As indicated by the pencil line?

Is the gap between the teeth looking ok? I've filed it a bit, also do the eyes look ok.

Thanks :)

Hey Stephen,

I'm not an experienced builder myself, but I'd say you could trim the eyes a bit more, especially the right one (right when wearing it, that is) - it looks a little "sleepy", if you know what I mean

Regarding the teeth, I think you can leave it as it is - maybe take a millimeter of the bottom, and perhaps slant the top part a bit so it follows the contour of the frown more? Just a suggestion, I hope I'm making sense ☺

Sincerely,

Christian

Thanks Christian, I will tweak the eye and the tooth and make it follow the contour of the frown. It's not until other people point things out that you see where it needs tweaking, it's a bit like the old saying "you can't see the wood for the trees"

Once again, many thanks :)

Ok I've tweaked the eyes and finished the teeth, next job cut out both half of the lid, drawn some lines where I think I need to cut. Any advice, thanks :)

Hey Stephen,

In my humble opinion, your eyes and teeth look great ☺ and I think your cut lines look fine too, so I'd say you can go ahead and trim the faceplate and the cap and back

I'm sure you've already researched a lot, but when I assembled my helmet, this thread helped me a lot - even though it is not an RS helmet:

http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/tutorials/article/1-howto-assembling-ata-abs-helmet-1/

This one too:

Hope it helps ☺

Sincerely,

-Christian

Thanks for the advice Christian, I must admit I think the right eye as you suggested looks better now that I have trimmed more if, plus the teeth following the frown look better also.

Thanks also for the links, I have copied the links to my iPad and will look at them now.

I really appreciate your help :)

Ok I have trimmed the forehead today and fitted the brow, I think it's a bit lob-sided as the tube curves on the cap don't line up with the face and when I make them line up then the brow is lower on the left side as you look at it , but then the top of the cap doesn't seem straight . Also the recesses above the brow are 1 inch deep in the right as you look at it and 1.25 inches deep on the left, should these be the same?

I don't think you should worry too much about the cheek tubes aligning; the ears will cover them anyway ☺ If I were you I'd focus on getting the brow line positioned correctly and centered properly, first and foremost - when the ears come on, you won't notice any misalignment between the front and back of the tubes ☺

Thanks Christian

Next job is to bolt the cap to the face

Christian has been right with his suggestions. The ears will cover and "hide" any misalignment of the cheek tubes. Having the front aligned properly is more important.

Eyes and teeth look excellent. The eyes could be smoothed a bit more, but you have them in a great position now.

My only addition at this point is to be careful when you attach the parts of the helmet. Are you planning to use just the ear screws, or did you intend to rivet the pieces together first, then add the ear screws later? The reason I ask... I used rivets to put together the cap and face, and accidentally put the rivet very close to where the ear screws ended up later. It didn't keep it from working in the long run, but did cause me to be concerned.

Thanks for the advice, it's very much appreciated. I was intending to use some small bolts initially (instead of the rivets) whilst I sort the ears out and decide how I'm going to fit the lenses , that way if I need to take it all apart later I can. Once everything is finalised I can rivet it. On the RS lid there are bumps where the rivets and ear screws go which I guess are where they were in the original, so I'm hoping, fingers crossed , that they will be ok . :)

I held the cap and face together earlier with some clips, this is what it looks like

That positioning is looking good ☺ I'm not sure that you can rely 100% on those bumps for drilling the holes, though, so be sure to use your common sense as well ☺ I ended up with a few extra holes in my helmet, but they are all covered by the ears, so it doesn't show at all.

Ok I have attached the cap to the face with some small bolts and plastic washers, this is only temporary until I rivet it in place. How does this look?

I am looking at the ears and wondering if the top two screws have to be vertical ? , does this look right?

Ok today I have tweaked the brow , looking at centurion applications on FISD their brows seemed lower, I think this looks better . 57539a1ccb9b6b7d843c6389d84746d8.jpg

It's still only bolted together . Will rivet it when I'm happy with it , been trimming the left ear as well, not got a pic of that sorry

c2e76541b4b2e9eee6fb5adac40af93e.jpg

Now the right side, well I've messed it up a bit, well a lot actually, doh, I've drilled so many holes in it I will need to fill some with abs paint, doh,

b2dff89989808c1b1d97679001bbb8fe.jpg

Some will be hidden behind the ears, some won't

Now I know it's two rivets and three ear bolts that hold the cap and face together , can you use more than two rivets? It's just that the cap and face aren't fitting flush on each side, it is flush around the brow

Thanks

Yep, agreed. Your ears are good to go! (The ears are my least favorite part of building the lid.)

Done the first coat of grey today, needs another cost and a bit of the black needs touching up.

Is the width of the black boarders ok or is it too wide?

Thanks
