fuumantroop[TK] Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 What has worked best for YOU? Ive talked to a few members that have pointed me towards spray painting ammo pouches black, and just masking off the buttons...and i already have the spray paint handy....and also dye for another project.....but what say YOU? pandatrooper[TK] Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 On canvas pouches? Black liquid RIT dye over the green pouch. Quote
Plasma Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 I tried dyeing and it didn't comet black enough. In the end I painted it. Quote
humperdingle Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 If it's leather, you'll need to ascertain if there's a coating on the leather (waxy, acrylic, PU etc).

If not, I use Fiebings edge kote, which covers much better than their regular dyes.

If there IS a coating, you'll need to try and remove it with acetone and steel wool.

Or just spray them black Quote
fuumantroop[TK] Posted April 2, 2016 Author Report Posted April 2, 2016 Sorry, yes they are green canvas pouches Quote
BadBatch[501st] Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 I used Tandys new water based leather dye (sprayed it on with an airbrush).Gives a nice soft finish, not crusty like paint can be sometimes. Quote
Mutter Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 I did the same as pandatrooper, Black liquid RIT dye. I used 2 boxes and let it soak for a few hours. Quote
fuumantroop[TK] Posted April 2, 2016 Author Report Posted April 2, 2016 Ive heard dying it will start rubbing off on your armor though? This is according to a source, not from personal experience obviously Quote
pandatrooper[TK] Posted April 8, 2016 Report Posted April 8, 2016 Not if you set the dye properly. Quote
tk48911[TK] Posted April 15, 2016 Report Posted April 15, 2016 I did the same as pandatrooper, Black liquid RIT dye. I used 2 boxes and let it soak for a few hours. did you end up using a sealer afterwards?Ā Quote
pandatrooper[TK] Posted April 16, 2016 Report Posted April 16, 2016 (edited) I did it the lazy way, soaked it in hot salt water for 30 mins then rinsed it, hung dry. It's never faded or rubbed off. Edited April 16, 2016 by pandatrooper 1 Quote
Mutter Posted April 17, 2016 Report Posted April 17, 2016 did you end up using a sealer afterwards? Ā Nope. Soaked in salted water and rinsed afterwards until the water was clear. 1 Quote
WDunham[501st] Posted April 18, 2016 Report Posted April 18, 2016 I ended up spraying the front of mine and left the back green so the paint didn't rub off on the armor... but look at it this way... its a good way to weather your armor!Ā =D 1 Quote
tk48911[TK] Posted April 20, 2016 Report Posted April 20, 2016 thanks for the tips...I purchased 1 8oz bottle of the RIT black dye and a can of black fabric spray....think I might try the spray method first! 1 Quote
NabooKnight[501st] Posted April 22, 2016 Report Posted April 22, 2016 I've done both but I settled on using black plasti dip on my canvas ones. It gives it kind of a rubbery coating and it doesn't rub off. I like because it flexes with the fabric so it doesnt flake off. It also colors the thread around the edges whereas the dye did not stick to the thread in my first few attempts. Quote
fuumantroop[TK] Posted April 22, 2016 Author Report Posted April 22, 2016 Rustoleum flat black spray paint is what i used. No flaking, no rubbing off, easy application, and not as messy at all Quote
