TobesMahone Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Tony has very graciously donated a nice faceplate. Soon I will be uploading pics of the assembly Ā wow wow great work, you're worth your weight in gold! Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Tonight I am going to repair the cracked faceplate that was donated. When I get done it will be stronger than new. For this I will need scissors, an old pillow case, super glue, painters or duct tape, and some exam latex gloves. Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Here are the cracks that will need repairing.. Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Before I get started, I am going to trim off the un-needed plastic... Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Now I am going to trim off some of the pillow case to make my "mini fiberglassing patches".... Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 I am taping the crack under the chin first across, to pull the plastic back together. Then lengthwise to hold the general shape. Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Now I am going to tape the side of the tubes where the webbing ocurred. .. Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Now comes the "fun" part. Put on the latex gloves and take the super glue out. Run a small bead of super glue along the line of the crack like so... Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Take a patch about the size of the crack and put it directly down on the super glue. Put some more super glue on the patch until its completely saturated. Use your latex finger to smear and tap the glue into the fibers of the patch. Do this gently. Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Now I am going to do the sides with the webbing cracks.. Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 And thats it for now. This will need to set for an hour or so. The "mini fiberglass method" works REALLY insanely well. I have NEVER EVER had anything break after doing this. Its hardly noticable as well as being very light too. Quote
HPDblues[TK] Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Thanks totallee AMAZING dude! Ā T Quote
SuperTrooper Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Nice job Mike. I've used superglue and glass clothbefore, but never though to use a strip of shirt or pillowcase. Quote
stukatrooper Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Nice little tip! Ā I would think that works very well on thin parts we find from time to time. Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 16, 2008 Author Report Posted June 16, 2008 First off, Happy Fathers Day!!! I had a blast today with the wife and kids To pick up where we left off. As you can see the areas are repaired and we will need to use glazing putty to smooth things out. Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 16, 2008 Author Report Posted June 16, 2008 Now its time to trim out the eyes and teeth. Using a pencil I make rough guidelines to follow for both the eyes and teeth. There are several ways you can do them. You can pre-drill out the larger areas and then use an exacto blade or file to finish it up. I have decided to score the outside of the eyes here until I can just pop out the plastic easily. After that I use the exacto knife to clean the holes up. Then I sand the holes out to the final shape. Quote
TK-4510[501st] Posted June 16, 2008 Author Report Posted June 16, 2008 Now that the eyes are done I am on to the teeth. Using a small exacto knife I cut just the tips off the teeth from the back. Then I trim from the back while looking at the front, and cut the teeth again, using the exacto knife, to their final shape. Ā Quote
