Newbie with questions.

Hello, Imperials.

I am desperate to join the might 501, and have been for years. My problem is that, I have NEVER made armor like this, ever, and I am not very handy or crafty and I am insanely worried I will mess up my build. I've done a lot of research so far, and seems I ought to go with the AM armor, cause Im a bit fat for a stormtrooper, and it has been suggested that AM may fit better, and requires a lot less trimming. Really though I want to know how hard to assemble one of these kits will be, how hard to install a mic, etc. I havent contacted my local garrison yet, because I don't want to until I HAVE my armor...but really I just want to make sur eI do not mess up. Hell, I'd be willing to pay someone to help me assemble it, lol. Anyway, I could use a lot of pointers and tips. I cannot wait to finally join the Empire..

Hi Wyant and welcome to FISD! I am here to tell you that most everyone has been in your shoes at some point. Most everyone is nervous about that first cut and assembling their armor. I too first thought about having someone assemble my armor. But then I decided to give it a shot on my own and I am so happy that I did. The rewarding feeling you have when you look at your armor after you assemble it yourself is unexplainable. I am not very handy but I think I ended up doing a great job on my set. With the help of this great forum anything is possible and there are many experienced members here who will help you get through it. Good luck and have fun!

I'll second what starsaber25 wrote. When you get your kit, you'll say like a lot of us have "what have I gotten myself into?" But once you get going, you'll find it easier than you thought! And even more fun than you thought.

 

I suggest going ahead and getting in touch with your local Garrison. A lot of them have build parties where you can go and they help you do your build. You are already ahead of the game in that you've been researching. That's a very important tip....research. Ask any question you have, no matter what it may be.

 

While waiting for your kit, go ahead and start collecting supplies....straps, Velcro, snaps, clamps, sharp hobby knife, metal ruler. I recommend e6000 glue. Strong but allows to take pieces apart for adjustments. You'll see people mention CA glue. It's good but it's very strong and wouldn't recommend it if you have little to no experience with it. Get plenty of tape and tape your armor pieces together before gluing to get good fitting and measurements. Take your time, measure twice and cut once and always have a fresh blade in your knife, helps making clean cuts.

Welcome aboard, Wyant!    Besides lots and lots of research, one of the things you will need is patience.  It will probably take a bit to actually receive your armor, which gives you the opportunity to check out some of the builds and get your supplies and accessories together.  I have a friend who could barely use a screwdriver, yet managed to make himself a beautiful set of AM armor.  I would suggest starting your own build thread when you get your kit.  This way, you can post pictures of your progress, post any questions you may have, and keep everything accessible in one place.

Thanks for the support guys! I will definitely keep researching and look into the supplies. I still havent ordered my kit, but I think Im just gonna do it. Ill definitely keep trolling and posting as I need help. Thanks!

Welcome to the FISD.

All the story's above are absolutely true, research, patience, never , ever built armor before, and that OMG moment when the big brown box arrives and you spread all the bits out on the floor for the first time.

One thing I learnt. "Never underestimate your ability", you will surprise yourself I am sure of it. And besides, it is awesome fun building the kit yourself.

All not being handy is going to do is cause you not to get cocky about your cuts and check 3 times before you do anything, which is good. I haven't started my armour yet either but I know that from woodworking. My dad has a habit of getting cocky and making things explode on the lathe lol.

 

So do it yourself and so super slow, check everything repeatedly, come here for help and you'll be fine. Yesterday someone noticed that a new troopers shoulder bell was 1/4 inch too far out lol These guys know what they are talking about that's for sure/.

Welcome! I think all of us new guys are in the same boat! The FISD staff are extremely accommodating and helpful. In my experience so far they've put up with my relentless questions and have only been kind and patient in return. I think you'll enjoy the same experience man.
