ANH TK Black paint color discussion

So, I've been doing some thinking about this and I'd like some of the heavy hitters to weigh in a bit.

 

I have seen the charts, but not been able to find all of the discussions.

 

Is there a definitive answer on what black was used?

 

Is all the black used Humbrol 85, satin black, or Humbrol 21 Gloss black?

 

The majority of helmets I see build use Humbrol 21 for the pinstripes, vocoder and mictips. The paint sets from trooperbay and other sources sell humbrol 21 but not 85. (Maybe it's not easily available outside of Europe?)

 

Some variations use Humbrol 33 flat black for the vocoder and 21 for the rest.

 

So what is the answer here!?

I used satin #85 on the vocoder and gloss #21 on the pin striping. But you can probably go all satin and look killer.

Best of all would be to do your own research and form an educated opinion instead of relying on others, who may very well be wrong.

IMHO, using two different finishes on the trap/tear and rank bar areas would look distracting. If the main area is gloss gray, why do the vents and outlines in flat? Satin (semi-gloss) black for both vocoder and hovi tips

lol.. I agree. Definitely looked at pictures of screen-used lids before asking. Old pictures make it hard to determine whether white seen on vocoders is from flash (meaning semi-gloss) or from missing paint exposing white plastic without the vocoder paint reflecting much (meaning flat). And SOMEBODY here had better know!😄 I'll just stick with 21 for everything but mic and vocoder, thank you Gaz.

Where else should I ask if not this thread, considering its title?

The mic tips and vocoder appear to be the same kind of black and I have never seen any mic tips gloss, so i wouldn't do the vocoder gloss either. Satin black seems like the way to go to me.

This is also something I was wondering about. Fading over time especially in such a high use scenario like the helmets are in.

I would go with what you like the look of. It definitely not matt black, so try satin or gloss and see what matches the screen used look best..

 

I have also found different results in the end look depending on wether you are painting black on to shiny abs or a painted helmet...
