Hi all,

I'm going to order two fans and a couple of rechargeable USB battery packs this week.  I'll be going with 5v fans.  My question is, what size fans do you recommend, 50mm, 20mm?  Also, where are your fans mounted and what issues if any have you had with the placement?

I've seen some of the fan packs put together here by some members like Echo.  They look great, but I'm just wanting to do some extra customization to my helmet.  Plus, I need something to keep me busy until my armor arrives.

Thanks for any and all replies.

Thanks Andrew.  I'd also like to ask, what type of fan.  There are the ones that just blow front to back and there are the ones that draw air from the side and blow out the middle (or vice versa if you reverse the polarity).

Get a "blower fan" aka squirrel fan. Don't waste your time with the cpu fans as they do nothing but circulate air, whereas the blower fan will cool you and circulate air

Hey Brian like Andrew mentioned squirrel fans are highly recommended above anything else.

As for circulation, in my bucket I have two inlet and two exhaust fans which keep air circulating in the direction that works best for me.

Key note to remember, any obstructions in your helmet like foam blocks (especially if not positioned correctly) will prevent air from adequately flowing.

An alternative to foam blocks is a helmet insert as seen on trooperbay.com. The helmet insert (or hard hat insert) suspends the helmet off your head allowing air to circulate more efficiently. This is also what I use, and highly recommend.

Hope this helps

Thanks Tony,

I'm going to use foam in strips about 1 inch wide in the top.  I'm planning on only using two.  Just to keep the helmet at the right height.  I'm going to use as little on the back, front and sides to allow for circulation.  I've been doing some research, and this is what I'm planning on using...

Two fans mounted near the mic tips.-------------

Hopefully, these two fans will be enough.  If not, I should have enough room in the helmet to try adding two exhaust fans, as you mentioned.  Thanks again for the advice.

My pleasure  :duim:  I have two sets, love them.

In my first generation helmet electronics build I used these USB switches to power my fans. They worked very well. Just another FYI

Placement does matter I have 2 sets of fans depending on what batteries I want to use of how strong the air flow I want. right now im using (2) 5v fans with on off rocker switch powered by a 9v battery and I have them positioned to blow air to the front of the helmet and since im using a throat mic it does not affect me at all. for some reason I cant upload pictures here( or still cant figure out how) but heres the links so you can see the fans and how they are set up
