Quadan[501st] Posted February 17, 2015 Report Posted February 17, 2015 (edited) ------------ On fixed income It took me a while (3 years) to save up for my armor. now I need to get my bucket outfited on the cheap. What do you guys think of the above listed voice amps? Edited March 30, 2022 by gmrhodes13 link removed no longer working Quote
Dark PWF[Staff] Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) If I were to choose one, I'd go with the first one. This is a very sensible approach you're taking. Having an amp allows you to engage more actively with the community, and is always something that you can upgrade later. People are always shocked when we speak. I don't get it, but they're always shocked. Edited February 18, 2015 by Dark CMF Quote

Dark PWF[Staff] Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) For hearing improvements, depending on your comfort level with soldering, you can buy a kit at Radio Shack for about $25 +shipping, or you can look for an EAS (Environmental Amplification System) in the on-going runs here at FISD. I have the pre-assembled EAS kit. I have one installed in my bucket, and trooped with it for the first time just about a week ago. It is seriously a game changer. The effects are very subtle, but very powerful. You don't fully realize that you're using speakers in the bucket most of the time, but you can hear slightly better than if you had your bucket off. At the Comic Con I attended last weekend, there was a couple there in the (very loud) vendor area and the woman was trying to convince the man to ask us if he could have his picture taken with us. He kept on resisting her. The whole time, we were about ten feet away from them and not looking in their direction. They were carrying on in those hushed tones between each other and during a break in their conversation, I simply turned towards them and stared right at them. They both looked half surprised by this. Then, I said "Yes, you can have your picture taken with us, but you have to ask nicely. Just like she told you to do." The looks on their faces were great, and there is no way that I'd have even been aware of their presence without that EAS running in my helmet. Edited February 23, 2015 by Dark CMF Quote
TKedt[TK] Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) the only issue is the feedback. I tried amps before and they feedback but the only way to know is trying it. for $8 may be worth it. But yes, it makes a difference having an amp. At troops people get a kick when they can here the sound . They say . "Wow , sounds so real" I have a 12 watt aker, I paid $35 and its very worth it. Edited February 18, 2015 by TKedt Quote
Dark PWF[Staff] Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 (edited) Yeah, you've got to get the mics isolated as best as you can, and then find a nice balance on the sound level. I've got mine balanced pretty well. But you've got to take into account the fact that your head will be in there, too. For me, I adjust it until I've got the tiniest bit of intermittent feedback happening before I put it on, and it appears to be the right level once I put it on. LordNikon Posted February 22, 2015 Report Posted February 22, 2015 (edited) I had great success using acoustic echo cancellation to battle feedback in my Android voice amp app experiments.Should work equally well for hearing improvements...Perhaps there should not be one, but TWO Android phones in the bucket. One for voice amp, and one for hearing improvements.I could do both voice amp and hearing improvements in one app, but I would be one audio channel short. Mono hearing improvements? Nah...Hmmm...Well, we are looking for two 'droids, are we not?!? Edited February 22, 2015 by LordNikon 1 Quote
