Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 I've been meaning to make a thread documenting what I've been doing, but ya know.... caught up in what I was doing. So.... here we go! The box arrives. My daughter steals my helmet for the first time. Everything laid out Quote
Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 3, 2014 Author Report Posted August 3, 2014 sanded out the teeth from the inside of the helmet. Just held the sand drum over the bumps in the inside of the frown until the plastic just dropped out. Then filed down a little until I was happy with the look. Quote
Snaps[TK] Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 Looks like you already have a future trooper John. Best of luck with your build! Quote
Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 3, 2014 Author Report Posted August 3, 2014 Taped up the helmet, drilled the holes, riveted the back to the faceplate, and glued the dome to the top. Quote
Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 3, 2014 Author Report Posted August 3, 2014 For whatever reason, it's not letting me post any more pics right now.... not sure if there is a limit with a certain amount of time or if my Tapatalk app is being stupid. I will update more later. Quote
Rystan Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 Hi John, looking good! Except, you only wanted 4 of the 5 holes on each side of the frown removed per the CRL. It seems to be a pretty common mistake people are making with our new AM kits. Quote
Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 3, 2014 Author Report Posted August 3, 2014 Yeah, someone else pointed that out to me as well. *shakes fist at the 501st trooper that helped me* No worries though. I have plenty of scraps, so with a little acetone I can make a slurry and fill those gaps in. Quote
Rystan Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 I read somewhere that if you dry out a baby wipe and glue it across the hole (like you would saran wrap over a bowl), the resulting membrane would make a good surface to contain the abs/acetone slurry while it's solidifying. Might be worth a shot. I'll see if I can find it again. Quote
Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 3, 2014 Author Report Posted August 3, 2014 Sounds likenangood idea Quote
BRIZK Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 i started my AM build a 2 days.. one mistake so far for me Quote
BRIZK Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 No! But I learned form this post not to cut on the first teeth. I cut more than a had to on my right forearm : Quote
Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 4, 2014 Author Report Posted August 4, 2014 No! But I learned form this post not to cut on the first teeth. I cut more than a had to on my right forearm : I can hear my 501st friend speaking to you now....."cut less than you think you need to. It's easier to trim more than grow more plastic." Quote
BRIZK Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 that's what i'm going to do on the biceps see how it turns out. how are you doing on your build? I can hear my 501st friend speaking to you now....."cut less than you think you need to. It's easier to trim more than grow more plastic." Quote
Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 4, 2014 Author Report Posted August 4, 2014 How I feel I'm doing is different from how I'm actually doing. I've made a couple of really dumb mistakes, but nothing unfixable. I've completed trimming and sanding on the forearms, thighs, shins, ab plate, and butt plate. Fore arms are curing now. The helmet has been put glued and riveted in place, the black brow piece has been set, and teeth are cutout. I'm working on attaching the ears now, which has led me to discover new ways of using the f-bomb. I spend half my time frustrated, and the other half amazed I'm doing this at all. Still having a lot of fun working on it, and that's what's important in the end. Quote
fuumantroop[TK] Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 Did ya follow the dimples on the bucket exactly btw? Quote
Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 4, 2014 Author Report Posted August 4, 2014 Did ya follow the dimples on the bucket exactly btw?Except for the forth one rat kinda sits out to the side. The ears don't line up on one side because the bottom base is a little too fat. Quote
Freak Nasty Fester Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 I'm working on an AM kit now too. ALso made the mistake of cutting out the small teeth so if someone has a "recipe" for the slurry, it would be awesome. Also, my helmet is a little jacked to one side. I drilled exactly through the dimples in the plastic, but it looks messed up. Any thoughts? Redrill new holes on the side with no gap between the eyes and brow? Quote
Ditch[501st] Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 I can hear my 501st friend speaking to you now....."cut less than you think you need to. It's easier to trim more than grow more plastic." Hey John. Remember, it's easier to cut it then to grow it. Just had to remind you again. Quote
Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 6, 2014 Author Report Posted August 6, 2014 Hey John. Remember, it's easier to cut it then to grow it. Just had to remind you again. Ha, at least you know I was listening Quote
Dark PWF[Staff] Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 Hey there John! Just a couple of things to run by you: Have you been using a photo-hosting site to post them in the build, or just posting them directly here on FISD? If you're just posting them here, you'll run out of room very quickly. If you use a hosting site like photobucket, you'll probably have much better luck. And, I have to ask; Are you building to EIB/Centurion standards? Quote
Capi'tanc'runch Posted August 9, 2014 Author Report Posted August 9, 2014 Have not been building to Centurion standards. And that totally explains why I haven't been able to post, so I should be be to put more pics up later Quote
Dark PWF[Staff] Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 Awesome. Looking forward to more pics! You should at least take a look at the advanced standards to decide if you'd like to go for them. They are easier to build into the armor, than to add on to the armor. Just food for thought. Quote
