A Master Builder Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 After having your side shims glued and reinforced by a for sale sign behind the shims....what tool do I use to curve my shims so it will construct the shape to match my kidney. I do have a sealing iron as well a heat gun. Which one is better to use. After I curve my shims, then I will apply my abs paste. Just wondering. They stick out in my EIB SUBMISSION. Snaps[TK] Posted June 24, 2014 Report Posted June 24, 2014 Use the heat gun! I used heat gun after applying the paste, still worked out fine. Quote
PhoenixTrooper[TK] Posted June 24, 2014 Report Posted June 24, 2014 Careful using a heat gun directly on abs paste. it will bubble up all foamy looking and you'll have to sand it down again. Better to shape and then paste if you can. Quote
gazmosis[501st] Posted June 24, 2014 Report Posted June 24, 2014 For your application you would be better off getting a scrap piece of actual abs. You can pre-bend it prior to installation then install it flush with the existing kidney sides for a much cleaner result. Quote
I'm Batman[501st] Posted June 24, 2014 Report Posted June 24, 2014 A third option would be to get that scrap piece, as Steve said, and dip it in hot/boiling water. Then you can curve it gradually without directing heat onto a small concentrated spot, pull out, let cool. Quote

I could just take them apart and boil it, I guess. Quote

I tried bending it, but its quite hard to do that Quote
I'm Batman[501st] Posted June 24, 2014 Report Posted June 24, 2014 I bent my shins using the boiling water method with GREAT success. Would be easier to remove from the armor though, as you said. Quote
