Anybody know if there is any real film canon about what the cylinder on the back of the TK belt is supposed to be? Is it an O2 canister or a thermal detonator? (Sources please...)

There is no canon explanation. You could go with the visual dictionary, but that is all made up stuff for kids. Not the most reliable source. That book says it's a thermal detonator however.

There are several anecdotes about the armor itself known to the film crews. The molded plastic back plate has two bars and a circular impression, comically called the "twinkies and donut" as if the backpack was an emergency food storage unit. The canister on the rear belt was originally going to be a lightsaber/laser sword due to early drafts of the artwork and film script having swordplay be fairly common, and laser swords carried by nearly every character.

The armor was also noted to be somewhat uncomfortable to wear, and actors in it would tend to prefer to sit on saw horses rather than in normal chairs.

I've been trying to settle this for years! I always say O2 canister. In the film, we saw those space troopers aka stormtroopers with scuba tanks outside on the death star. We know the thermal detonators are silver balls you use when trying to persuade jabba to cough up more dough. When have you ever seen a stormtrooper throw a detonator? In Battlefront the grenades were silver ball kind. Lastly TD means sand trooper! Sandy's don't have O2 cans like stormies cuz they have a big backpack that supplies air or whatever. The same control panel on ours is glued to the long tube on a sandy, indicting from the screen that that could be an elongated O2 can, implying they need longer air time in the harsher environments.

I personally believe it is an O2 can. As Dizzy said, all troopers in space had them and troopers on planets didn't.

Endor is the exception but given the majority of those troopers would have been recently transferred to the planet to trap the rebels it makes sense they would still have them, as they were originally stationed in space.

In the early version of the CRL's we called them O2 canisters as the suits were supposed to be self-contained, so it made sense, and also they were referred to as such in all the Legion references at the time. However, the Visual Dic called them thermal detonators and Thomas Spanos - the LMO at the time - made us change all the CRL's to match this when he reviewed them.

Personally I think O2 cylinders makes more sense - else why didn't anyone ever use one to fight off the Ewoks?

Derek - love your explanation BTW!

Ever here the term," something in the water"?

Maybe there's something in the O2 cans....

Since Republic Commandos are supposed to have screwed up the droid factories through covert missions, maybe the last batch of clones didn't have bad DNA, nor bad laboratory facilities.

Maybe........someone ( or something) got into the imperial suppy or manufacturing lines.

Maybe that's why clones are all sharpshooters right up until one plunked Princess Leia with a stunner.

It's some sort of "keystone cop" molecule in vapor state.

Let's call Palpatine right away!!!!
