The original helmets didn't have frown mesh either. The mesh is a later invention.

Interesting! Was it ever in the movies? Or was it added to darken the helmet interior for balaclava-less trooping (ie hiding face for pictures).

It was never in any of the movies. It's a pure trooping invention.

Luckily I, like many others, found lots of help and advice here and on the UKG forum (we have some darn fine Armourers).

 

I'm grateful for the shoulders of giants. :)
