A Fubar'd Doopy's E-11 Build.

With all the excellent builds popping up lately I almost hate to do my own thread for fear of being embarrassed, but I'm a glutton for punishment so here goes.

 

Started with a full Doopy's kit. Here is a picture, I'm sure no one has seen it all laid out like this before.

I decided I wanted a working trigger and safety/selector so I drilled the trigger and housing for a pin, and drilled/tapped a hole where the selector goes and installed a fine thread screw, leaving it just a few threads loose.

 

 

I then drilled a hole in the back of the selector switch that is roughly the same size as the head of the screw.

 

 

...and double bubbled(2 part epoxy) the selector onto the screw head.

I self tapped it with the screw in a hole a couple sizes too small so the threads are nice and tight and the selector takes a little bit of effort to move and won't move on it's own. I thought about doing 3 indentions on the back of the selector and using a spring loaded ball in the grip to keep it in place but figured that might be going a little overboard.

 

Didn't accomplish much else today. Used a little 9309 to attach the two halves of the stock together.

 

Cleaned up/fitted the front sight.

Screwed the D-ring holder onto the end cap.

...and replaced a few of the screws on the counter with real ones. Not really sure why, but I figured it wouldn't hurt.

 

So there it is so far. I'm really happy with how my first Doopy's kit turned out but I'm hoping to make this one even better.

Not much progress today. Added a few screws to my scope. One was slightly longer than the hole I drilled was deep so I split a chunk of the scope off. Oops. It's already glued back together and I'm hoping to fill and clean it up so you'll never be able to tell.

A little more done this morning. Made a scope rail, wasn't that happy with it so I made another one.

I've got enough materials to make a couple more so I might be throwing them up for sale for cheap(or trade).

 

Spring loaded the trigger and finished up the grip portion.

Used a #1 spring out of the handy dandy Ace hardware spring assortment.

Installed a 1/4-20 Allen head bolt in place of the cast-in one.

 

Greatest invention ever.

 

I've primed and painted my scope. Turned out decent. I'll get some pictures up later. The blaster itself is mostly all glued together now as well.

Just cut out my counter bracket. Made it out of a piece of scrap .025 2024t6. It's a little thinner than I'd like but it should be strong enough to hold it. I need to dig up some reference photos to figure out where along the scope rail is the best place to mount everything. I'm considering getting some material and doing a run of these. It only took me a couple minutes to make and I figured someone might have a use for them. I'd just need to figure out what material and thickness would be the best/most accurate.

 

...and installed the allen screws at the barrel end.

Been a little busy so I haven't worked on this much lately. I just stripped the paint/primer off my M38. The primer I used didn't adhere to the resin very well at all and after given plenty of cure time I was still able to scratch it off with very little pressure from my finger nail.

 

New paintjob. I'm really happy with the paint this time. Used an "Antique Gold" from Ace Hardware's line of spray paint. Cured it in the "paint oven" and the finish is very durable and the color looks great. Now I just need to put some black over it and try my hand at weathering... something I've never really been able to do.

 

Getting ready for paint and looking up some reference photos to see what should be textured and what shouldn't. Having trouble finding good ones right now since half the internet is blocked at work. Guess it's a sign I should be doing actual work.

 

I figured I'd do the whole gun/stock in a metallic silver basecoat and then textured black over everything but the grip, t-track, scope and counter. This sound about right?

Looking good, yes base silver but not the grip, been told that is just gloss black as it was plastic, so no weathering on the grip (also scope is gloss black). Some use matt black I went for a satin black, I didn't texture very much, gave it two coats of the black, on the second coat I pulled the can futher away, this gives a more textured look, After I did a bit of weathering I decided to lock the weathering by giving it two coats of satin clear, some use a matt clear. Do a bit of testing see what you like, I just preffer satin, not shinny not flat, to me just gives it a nice look.

Dude, I love what you're doing with these E-11s. Makes me want to upgrade to a full doopy-doo kit instead of just the hasbro conversion that I currently have!

 

And if you ever do happen to make some extra rail scopes, let me know, I'd buy one and hoard it til I upgrade to the full doopy's kit.

It's literally about 10 minutes with a hack saw and some files.  Give it a go your self first, you'll be surprised how much you can do when you try.
