dinkyfish
Eyes trimmed, Frown trimmed. Are the eyes and frown trimmed enough? I've followed the various references, but would like to know other's opinions. I've tested the Humbrol paints on some scrap plastic. They don't go on very well! Any tips on this? Do you need a primer under the traps? Is it just a case of doing 2-3 coats?
gazmosis[501st]
No yoy don't need to prime. I would suggest to rough up any surface you will be painting with a little sandpaper to give the paint a little something to "bite" to. Be careful with the humbrol paints! If you apply them too thick, the paint will crinkle when drying. Keep multiple coats THIN! Keep in mind also, that the drying time is a MINIMUM of 8 hours. Maybe 6 if you leave it out in the sun. You can't be in too much of a hurry! I ended up airbrushing the traps on the back and the temples. I hand brushed the tears but with THIN coats to avoid the crinkling. I had a little bit of crinkling on my frown. That's my $ .
dinkyfish
First coat of Humbrol 5 and Humbrol gloss black (with a touch of clear flat)...
troopermaster
I have never seen Humbrol paint go like that before. Did you stir the paint thoroughly before you applied it?
dinkyfish
yes, Stirred it for a good 5 mins. I did sand the surface a bit, but it still struggled to bite into the surface... Maybe it has to do with me thinning it with Tamiya Enamel thinner? I'll put on the second coat and see what happens
troopermaster
Mixing different brands could be the problem. I have been using Humbrol paints for many years and they have never turned out like that when applied to the helmets. Hope it covers with the next coat. SCTrooper[TK]
The color look's good. I was wondering why you thinned the paint. The humbrol paint I have was very thin. You could paint the frown a hair bigger, just be sure to stay on the teeth and off the lip. Edited May 2, 2012 by SCTrooper
dinkyfish
I thinned the paint, to avoid crinkling.... see below- perhaps what was meant was to apply the paint thinly, rather than thin it down with thinner? Do hand painter here use the paint straight from the can/bottle, or thin down first? No yoy don't need to prime. The paint goes on really well as long as you give it a good stir before use. And I have never seen the paint crinkle in all my years using it either. Maybe gazmosis was applying the paint to an already painted helmet and not raw ABS? I would highly recommend Humbrol paints to anyone for trooper helmets. SCTrooper[TK]
Nice job! I see you are a sand trooper,is this helmet an upgrade?
dinkyfish
That was a 1/6 scale figure I made some years ago, before the days of internet. I only had a VHS version of ANH to reference from, hence the inaccuracies. This build will be a TK. I've noticed the trim ATA provide is a little wide.... I was thinking of trimming it down... What do people think? It looks a little too wide to me, and not black enough.
SCTrooper[TK]
The trim in the movie does look a tad narrower. I trimmed about 1/8" off of mine so it's around 1/2" wide. I used a steel ruler and put the trim on the ruler then used another one to cut it. You could trim one side of the rubber trim that way you can switch it back and see the difference, that's what I did.
dinkyfish
Some people have mentioned a US52 sized trim from seals direct as being the correct one to use.... http://www.sealsdire...tDepartmentId=3 they list it there as being 15mm.... My trim is 16mm.... so I might shave off 1mm from mine, as you suggested. I'm making the eyes a little bigger too... what do people think? SCTrooper[TK]
Nice! I see you took TM's advice on the eyes. The brow trim, trimmed down looks great and really makes a big difference in the look. Edited May 4, 2012 by SCTrooper

BigSlimJimmy
Beautiful bucket! I'll be using this thread for my ATA helmet for sure when I get it! Nice job
TyTimp
I'm having a very hard time trimming the ears! This is not easy! Thought I over trimmed the back of the right ear.... Can get it to sit flush... like this but the front won't sit flush then.... and similarly if the front sits flush the back has a wide gap.... Help! Not sure where to go from here, I'm afraid I'll trim off too much! Does the back look too thin yet? It's a good thing 2 sets of ears are supplied with the ATA Helmet as I screwed one up. In the end I got the left ear to sit flush but couldn't get the right to sit flush so I notched the top of the ear so that the back was thinner than the front. It made me feel better when I later noticed they did this on some of the real helmets. Edited June 5, 2012 by TyTimp
