Well, I got pwned by my reading skills again. I recently placed an order from Trooperbay.com and picked up two 10 pks of Rare Earth Magnets. What I didn't do was to read the fine print that said that these were 5/16" in diameter. So when I got my order and realized that I didn't order the larger ones (the ones I see in most project logs that are about the size of a quarter or so), I had a major  moment. I should have known when the price was just $3.50/10 pk. lol

So now I need to get some larger (correctly sized) Rare Earth Magnets and I had hoped to get some feedback, links, and pricing from my fellow FISD crew. If you can provide some insite, I would greatly appreciate it.

While I'm waiting, I'll post up a couple of pictures that show the size of the Earth Magnets I purchased from Trooperbay.com so you too can share in my fail.

If you are wanting the strongest, look for N52, or the next closest to it.

Hey Josh!

I actually did the exact same thing as you and ended up with the small magnets too! I now have purchased these magnets http://www.amazon.co...s00_i00_details. Tested them out and think they are gonna work pretty well. Definately strong, still sporting a bruise from where I got pinched!

I purchased mine from-------------- as well. Buy extra. After three months of building I lost a good amount from them slipping out of my hand and crashing into another manget or metal opject. After a few times of that they shatter.

ANOTHER QUESTION...

So I know that the thicker the magnet, the stronger the bond....

For Example, say you had two magnets, both in 1" Diameter, but one was 1/8" thick, the other 1/4" thick.

I assume the thicker magnet would have a higher strength, correct? How does it work when you stack them, does anyone know exactly how the strength multiplies (adds up)?

Say the 1/8" thick one has a force capable of holding 18 lbs, while the 1/4" thick one can hold 28 lbs. If I stack two 1/8" ones together, does it just double (ie: 18+18 = 36)? Or does the strength degrade once stacked (I assume it probably would). Basically, am I better off stacking 2- 1/8" ones rather than going with just one 1/4" one?

Any input on this?

Keep in mind you don't need an extreme amount of pull strength, you are simply gluing a couple of pieces of plastic together.

I can't answer you question about precisely how magnetic strength increases in proportion to thickness (other than it definitely does increase), but it seems simpler to just go with the single thicker magnet as opposed to stacking thinner magnets. You would eventually need to separate the stacked magnets (no mean feat), and there is always the risk of the magnets colliding with each other and shattering.

A bit off topic but I got the small ones first like you but found them really useful for covering screw heads around the home like in ceiling light fixings and such. They look much nicer than a screw head. Sorry to derail.

Any more input guys and gals?

It's pretty much right - you take 2 magnets that can hold 10kg, put them together then you have 1 magnet that can hold 20kg

Thank you so much for the feedback Josh. :) I have updated the listing on the 5/16 inch x 1/8 magnets to more clearly show the size in the title listing. I have also responded to requests to offer larger magnets and now offer 3/4 inch x 1/8 N52 Rare Earth Magnets. You can buy them in a 5 or 10 pack. http://trooperbay.com/34-inch-x-18-inch-thick-n52-rare-earth-magnets/

Awesome! Thanks for doing that. I'll be ordering some soon.
