Sonnenschein Posted September 11, 2012 Author Report Posted September 11, 2012 Update: I'm building a nice base out some clear pleastic (?) and some isolation foam I got donated . (This will be needed later for the latex casting process; I'll explain later. Much "ahead thinking was needed to save cash)) Next; -little bondo time + sanding - spray putty + more sanding (you'll get veeery smooth surfaces witgh this stuff!!) - glossy spray painting (this should be done by friday) - molding time (I need this to be plaster) - making plaster copy (I reserve the weekend for that) LATEX CASTING! Sonnenschein Posted September 11, 2012 Author Report Posted September 11, 2012 thanks! Cross your fingers! Actually, once the master sculpt is done, everthing is a piece of cake. I have a friend who helps me with the molds. Quote

Sonnenschein Posted September 12, 2012 Author Report Posted September 12, 2012 Thank you, Jim Thanks everybody for your encouragement. This is my "fuel" I love spray putty! Quote
TK bondservnt[501st] Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 (edited) several factors should be considered when choosing the material. needs to be stronger tear strength than latex. needs to have the paint mixed into the casting, and not just applied to the surface. needs to be flexible, and durable. when I look at different companies who sell rubber, or such, they have a tear rating. and the latex in a handguard does tear under certain kinds of stress. when I put my helmet on, my neckseal rubs in the back, and my helmet tears fabric neckseals apart at the rear of my seal. I hope to see all these elements! keep up the good work! Edited September 13, 2012 by TK Bondservnt 2392 Quote
Sonnenschein Posted September 14, 2012 Author Report Posted September 14, 2012 Thanks for your input, Vern! I'm considering all these elements. But the first ones will be black latex. I'll consider silicone ones one I have everything rolling. BTW: I hate sanding! Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted September 14, 2012 Report Posted September 14, 2012 Fingers are crossed, hope it helps Quote
89Batman[TK] Posted September 14, 2012 Report Posted September 14, 2012 Vern how does your helmet tear neckseals? Karin be aware of the toxicity of other materials, I understand urethane and some silicones can give off poisionous odours whilst curing. I am really looking forward to getting one of these when they are done. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2 Quote
Sonnenschein Posted September 14, 2012 Author Report Posted September 14, 2012 Thanks, Gary! Yeah, this is the reason I have'nt found a suitable material so far. I gues I'll have to look in, errh, toy industry for a suitable silicone. It has to be black, harmless, stretchy, and brushable. But first things first! Quote

TK bondservnt[501st] Posted September 15, 2012 Report Posted September 15, 2012 (edited) my neck is really large and my helmets are small. that's how I tear my 17 1/2" neckseal. looking forward to seeing this with a liner of some kind. when I look at the way the originals look at the neckline I see some kind of lining. photos! Spectre Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 I just read a few of the pages of this, and boy are you a good egg Karin! You've put so much effort into this! I think you're about to revolutionise neck seals. Definitely put me down for one when you finalise them! Quote
Sonnenschein Posted September 27, 2012 Author Report Posted September 27, 2012 Thanks, John! I really appreciate your kind words. The basic "sculpt" is almost done. Still need to mend some minor defects, making the ribs a little smoother (=losing the texture), in essence, make it "nicer! Then a silicone mold is made, because: *) I need a resin "back up" * to cast the seal, this "sculpt" needs to be made of plaster. Quote
Solcar23[TK] Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 Count me in for one! Looks awesome Karin! Quote
TK-42779[501st] Posted September 27, 2012 Report Posted September 27, 2012 Well jeez , Karin I would have ordered one from you along with my hand guards and gloves but had to go with Darman's. *sigh* Hurry up already.
