dashrazor Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 (edited) want to make that old yellowed ABS armor white again??? the yellowing is caused by a chemical reaction in the plastic (caused by the flame retardant used in ABS reacting with UV sunlight) but fortunately this reaction is reversible. and can be done at a reasonable cost and effort (actually easier than buffing painting sanding ect..) just by making a gel called retr0bright (DO NOT USE BLEACH!!!!)i have never done this personally but you can search google for retr0bright as well and see tons of examples of this method in action. this method is specifically for ABS plastic watch this part1 part2 read these sites ---------- i would make the gel myself ------------Retr0Bright+Gel after whitening the plastic i would apply a spray on UV protectant wax http://www.amazon.com/PRO-DETAILER-SPRAY-Carnauba-Detailer-Protectant/dp/B001WWPZF0 i found this info and thought it would be useful remember to always use safety goggles try this at your own risk science is FUN until somebody looses an eye Edited December 10, 2020 by gmrhodes13 link not working, removed gmrhodes13 2020 Quote

john danter Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 Yeah he's not lying. Bromine is used in ABS to make it fire retardant. Used in a lot of plastics as it goes I'd like to see this done on a test bit first though......? Quote
Quebectrooper Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 you might be safer to take him apart remove the electronics and clean the plastic parts individually mmm too much work then i'll just turn him into a femtrooper ! Quote
ctankep Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 Stupid question: does this mean that stormtrooper armour is fire resistant? Quote
dashrazor Posted March 2, 2011 Author Report Posted March 2, 2011 also note that if you do this you need to make sure it dosnt happen again To permanently prevent the yellowing from returning, just coat the parts with a clear acrylic varnish. Alternatively, you could use a protective polish such as Armor-All or Autoglym to provide a UV protectant to the surface. there are also uv protecting spray on clear coats as well Quote
