DarthVeach Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 I have seen it used here and TDH a lot but after a bunch of searches, I still haven't found a brand name for the purple masking fluid that lots of you use. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated! Quote
NoVATie[Admin] Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 I haven't seen any purple liquid mask but I use Winsor and Newton watercolor mask and it works just fine. Quote
john danter Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) I use Masquepen fluid It's white though not purple ----- Edited December 5, 2020 by gmrhodes13 link not working, removed gmrhodes13 2020 Quote
DarthVeach Posted February 24, 2011 Author Report Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) That might be it R2Dan. I will look into it. The stuff I have seen here and on TDH is what Bobamaker used in his tutorial. Hmmm maybe I should just ask him! ----- Edited December 5, 2020 by gmrhodes13 link not working, removed gmrhodes13 2020 Quote
DarthVeach Posted February 24, 2011 Author Report Posted February 24, 2011 R2 Dan, I searched Maskol and whattya know! Thanks for the tip! Now to find some! Quote
Eric Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 so... you apply this fluid type stuff and when you paint over it, it gives a weathered/chipped look right off the bat? Quote
R2Dan[TK] Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 it's masking fluid - means you mask the areas you don't want to get painted and paint over the masking fluid once it's dry. When the paint is dry, you can simply pull off the masking fluid, revealing the layer beneath. You can get the same effect with tooth paste or mustard, but the masking fluid will be more precise and you can actually brush it on Oh and it won't affect your lower layer, mustard might stain it. Quote
Eric Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 wow. so you paint it on, let it dry and then do your thing and peel it right off? how long does it take to dry? i could use something like that myself. i've never heard of it. Quote
NoVATie[Admin] Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 The Winsor and Newton dries in about 5-10 minutes if not less, it depends how thickly you put it on. I use a toothpick to pull it off after I've done the painting. I wouldn't leave it on for more than 1-2 days though as it becomes much harder to remove. Quote
DarthVeach Posted February 24, 2011 Author Report Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) From what I am reading you can also use liquid latex (since most masking fluid is a latex base anyway), I just know that the actual liquid masks can give you a lot cleaner edges and better detail. And was reading that the Humbrol was a favorite. Edited February 24, 2011 by DarthVeach Quote
Eric Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 sounds awesome. i'll hafta look into it. Quote
DarthVeach Posted February 24, 2011 Author Report Posted February 24, 2011 sounds awesome. i'll hafta look into it. Yeah, I might have to hunt for something comparable. Humbrol is a UK product and both of my big hobby shops here don't carry it. Haven't found any online places to order it here either. Quote
DarthVeach Posted February 24, 2011 Author Report Posted February 24, 2011 Awesome lid, Dan! Definitely the look I am going to go for! Quote

DarthVeach Posted February 25, 2011 Author Report Posted February 25, 2011 Yeah, but the shipping to USA will probably be double or triple the retail price of it. Got some Micromark Micro Mask on the way home. It is blue so it will be easy to see. I am going to test it first. Quote
Darth Voorhees[501st] Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 ive used the winsor and newton mask as well as a grumbacher one called "misket" they both worked excellent. on a side note...R2Dan..can you PM me the color you used to match the HDPE color? I want to build a replica helmet in the future and cant seem to find a color to match it..thanks bud... ok back to our regular scheduled thread Quote
trooper18938 Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 Frisket Liquid Latex masking agent is available in the US at art supply stores - it's slightly orange hued, Quote
SuperTrooper Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 (edited) Vallejo just came out with a masking fluid last month. They are my paint brand of choice and if it's anything like their other products it'll be excellent. ------ Edited December 5, 2020 by gmrhodes13 link not working, removed gmrhodes13 2020 Quote
john danter Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 Don't you have any art shops near you mate? It doesn't have to be purple Any masking fluid will do for what you want it for. It's just liquid latex really. Try a local art shop. I think it's used for water colours mainly Quote
DarthVeach Posted February 25, 2011 Author Report Posted February 25, 2011 The only reason I was looking for that purple, is it is so easy to see your work. I am afraid with the white or plain colored ones, it's going to be a bigger pain. Quote
