I was just wondering if there are people here who participate in this hobby simply for the love of SW movies and prop collecting, but haven't or have no desire to join the 501st. When i had my first set of armor, I never joined. Not because I didn't want to, just never did. Then I sold my armor. This time around I am starting out just for the sake of enjoyment, so a request for the 501st is still up in the air for me. Just curious!

Chris, joining the 501st will give you limitless opportunities to wear your armor and find much more enjoyment with your armor than if you don't join. I'm a 501st member and really enjoy the new friends I've made and the various special events I've gotten to participate in.

I think you'll find a good mix of both 501st aspirants, and those who simply love the movies and prop collecting.

I have not joined yet but have been in the hobby since 2000. I wanted to make my own suit before I joined - which is almost ready.

As someone who has trooped for almost a year before joining I can say that being a member does come with some perks. Some events are 501st only which can leave you out on the cold. That said, I now find myself with fewer pictures of each event and am thinking about just being a handler for some of them. So pros and con for both sides.

Will join as soon as i get my armour. :) seems like a good way to meet other people loyal to the empire. :D

Well, we're here to help both members and non-members. It's not important, as long as people enjoy what they do and contributes to the community. That's the whole point of the detachment, to share the knowledge and have fun with what we do. And the more people, the better for all.

The FISD is not an exclusive club, but rather a place for people looking for great info about the stormtrooper to gather around and share knowledge. :)

The FISD is not an exclusive club

it's not? i used to feel special because of it... :P lol.

i'm a 501st member, and it comes with it's perks. if for some reason you dont feel the urge to join, that's just a personal call you'll hafta make. but if you have armor, i dont see why not to join :)

I'm not a 501st member. I just love the costumes and the idea of building stuff. I started with Vader (in retrospect, I should have started with something EASIER!!), and decided I wanted to have more home-made SW lids and stuff around. I hang out on these forums mainly to learn more about the details of the costumes...and to chat with cool people too, of course. B)

i started out in this hobby before i had even heard of the 501st. and the love for the hobby and the FISD were the two things that originally made me decide to go for 501st membership. even though i cant really get out and troop on a regular basis (due to my geographical location) it just seemed to me that becoming 501st as the next step forward in the hobby that i enjoy :D

hey Michael, if your in eastern Canada you may be close to me :D i am near new Brunswick!

There are other costuming groups.

As I dont just specialise in Star Wars, I have never needed to join the 501st . I troop as a TK and with other groups, and also with my other costumes/props regularly .

This doesnt stop me enjoying this web site , nor does it stop me participating in this forum.

Yeah, I worry about joining and then never being able to go to events, etc since I am so busy with work, life, etc.

You only have to attend ONE 501st event to maintain your membership. "One year is defined as a rolling 12-month window from last troop so, for example, a member trooping on June 30 will have to troop on or before June 30 the following year to be considered active."-Legion Charter Article II Membership Section D2.

I am 501st, but it is extremely hard to get me to do anything with them. Now that I have been liberated and am now in a new garrison, we'll see if things change.

Speaking of 501st perks: there is an event in the works for our garrison and the event coordinators want us there so badly that they are trying to arrange it so that our food and hotel are paid for as well as obtaining a jet to fly us all to the location! Good luck getting opportunities like that w/o joining the 501st! B)

Coz thats what its all about!

Its got nothing to do with the fact you will have far more oppertunities to help those less priveleged than your self and be officially allowed to play in LFL's sandbox,it coz you can sometimes get expenses!!

The Screen Actors Guild does the same, only difference is that they pay you for the work they have you do. LFL doesn't.

My 4+ years in the 501st taught me some things, one which is that we are often used as slave labour to help companies make money.

Once I get my build done, my aim is to join the 501st but more importantly for me to get my EIB here. I just like the idea of knowing that my armour is veiwed as good enough by the experts here. One question, if I join the 501st but don't get to troop for a year and am therefor not an active member, do I loose my EIB on here? Also, do I have to join a garrison?

I joined the UKG site a while back and submitted my Qui-Gon Jinn costume for clearance, only to be told im far too short and don't look old enough...so from that day on i have vowed never to be a fully fledged member even if crewing was the route to achieve this status. I was also told that if i was to modify the costume i could apply for Generic Jedi instead!! As if the being short and young wasn't insulting enough, they suggest i spend MORE money to modify sumthing ive had tailored especially as Qui-Gon Jinn and cost in the region of £1400!! Noway!!

But hey at least i still get to troop with my home club the Emerald Garrison in Ireland and we have been going from strength to strength over the last few years

Sorry to hear that Warren, open face characters will never be exactly the same looking as the actor who played it.If that was a rule nobody could do this type of character. It is a shame really as every Star Wars fan who has ever seen you troop in Ireland knows exactly who you are trying to be.UKG loss is the Emerald Garrison's gain.Don't let this put you off the 501st,although it is a shame that non 501st guys can't have the same access to parts of these types of forums as 501st guys. MAY THE fORCE BE WITH YOU
