john danter Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 (edited) Any advice on how to stick together ROTJ lids with those odd little ears There are no screws then or were they filled in or something? Doubt it so they must have been glued on....? --------- Edited January 26, 2021 by gmrhodes13 link not working, removed gmrhodes13 2021 Quote
Sonnenschein Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 They were just glued on.... I'm sure Joe will chime in soon to confirm. Quote
sskunky Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 The way I do it is to clamp them in place then just get a fine paint brush dip it in some Acetone and touch the brush to the seam. The acetone will run down the seam and should weld the two pieces together. Failing that you could fill the inside of the round part with quick cast resin and inbed a screw in to the resin. Then you can screw it in place without the screw showing on the outside. On the second technique all credit goes to Kieth as I saw his thread on how to do that. Or you could simply superglue them on. The originals were quite craptastic! Hope this helps dude...... Quote
john danter Posted January 21, 2011 Author Report Posted January 21, 2011 Yeah it does ta I think I'll try bathroom sealant ad well as I messed the ears up Not really but there's gaps there lol Thanks Quote
BlueGrot Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 I figured they were attached by mounting screws on pieces of plastic to be welded to the inside of the ears with plastic weld, not unlike Keith's mentioned method. Quote
trooper18938 Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 In my experience, Bathroom sealant remains gooey and soft - probably not the ideal adhesive - check out Keith's thread ... and remember to put the notch in the top of the earcap so it will sit flush between the step caused by the join of the 2 helmet halves. JoeR Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 (edited) Keith's method was awesome and worked really well. The originals had load of glue seeping out around the edges. ----------- Edited January 26, 2021 by gmrhodes13 link not working, removed gmrhodes13 2021 Quote

john danter Posted January 23, 2011 Author Report Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) I liked Keiths approach but was worried I'd mess up where to drill the screw holes (Thinking about it, I should have just marked the screws with paint and job done - but how would I knwo the ear is in the correct position) This is how I've done it - with bathroom sealant Draw around the ear ------- Drill a few holes in that space - this will allow the sealant to seap through and form a mushroom type shape -------- Make a ROTJ and bathroom sealant ear shaped fondant cake ----- Squeeeze Use magnets to squeeze it together I also used tape to hold it all on top --- Now then, don't worry about the mess. I tried it on the inside to test. It dries like hard rubber. Cut with a scalpel around the ear and just peel it off I'll post pics up tomorrow. It works fine Just a little messy at first Edited January 26, 2021 by gmrhodes13 link not working, removed gmrhodes13 2021 Quote

trooper18938 Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Looking good - I like the "rough look" as if it was glued up in the 80's Quote
john danter Posted January 24, 2011 Author Report Posted January 24, 2011 Thanks Yeah I could clean that up with a new layer of sealant and wet finger, but will leave it as was when made Quote
