Wiggleplum Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Hello everyone, I have seen pauldrons on mostly sandtroopers, but also on a couple of stormtroopers. Does anyone know what the different colors mean and if there were actually any stormtroopers wearing them on film? Thanks Quote
SamJ[501st] Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Not in the movie, no, the only guys who had pauldrons were the sandies; black, white and orange. The TKs you've seen with pauldrons are EU characters such as incinerator troopers with the red pauldron. Quote
TK_LEPER Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Don't forget the grey sandy pauldron! Quote
Quebectrooper Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) ------------ The first one was worn by the Sandtrooper coming out of the bathroom in the cantina scene , the middle one by the Stormtrooper who was playing cards on the death star with the other two Troopers and the 3rd one belongs to the Sandtrooper who was chasing the Sandpeople in the desert on a motocross! Just kidding Samj was right . If you wanna know why they had different colors go here and log in you'll see photos and explanations: http://forum.mepd.net/index.php?showforum=3 . Daetrin[Admin] Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 From The Making of Star Wars: George Lucas asked the props guy how to tell the sandtroopers apart by rank, so they grabbed some chest protectors and painted them. Uncle George just arranged them as he wanted to look cool in the shot. When they got to the Death Star, Uncle George wanted them all to look the same, so they did. The gray pauldron is actually a toy maker mistake - there never were any. Thus... * Film canon sandtroopers wear only black, white, and orange. * Film canon stormtroopers never wear pauldons * EU Heavy Weapons Troopers wear orange (in the game), but also are allowed black and white for logic reasons * EU Incinerator Trooper wears a red pauldron (per game reference) * Nova Elite Troopers wear a gold pauldron (per game reference) What rank do they mean? Nothing was intended, but people create back stories for them all the time, including LFL. Personally I dig the explanation that they indicate the same thing as pauldrons do on clones, as it would make the most sense. Just coincidently most of the old clone troopers became officers. Quote
supa troop Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Are you sure this is correct, im sure if you look there may be the odd TK with a pauldron on in Mos Eisely, not all the sandtroopers had Backpacks or indeed pauldrons, and we cannot be 100% that all the Troopers in Mos Eisely had Diamond Knee plates and different belly plates. in all fairness i think the original poster of this thread really wants to know can he as a clean Stormtrooper wear a pauldron for your garrison probably not in the comfort of your own space of course you can however go dirty mate its a great project dirtying your armour Quote
Daetrin[Admin] Posted January 19, 2011 Report Posted January 19, 2011 Yeah, I am as I read the book. Yes, you can see sandtroopers without packs and pauldrons, but these are clearly due to the fact that they are just background characters with really no screen time, and at the time the movie was made they weren't as anal about these kinds of wardrobe issues as people are now. Heck - look all over SW and you can see similar issues. Officers with no rank bars or straight legged pants, missing tube stripes. Even in the Move Along scene there are parts falling down, etc. Actually we can be certain about the Mos Eisley troopers. If you look both at the films and at all the behind the scenes photos, you'll not find a single drop box, pentagon sniper plate, or ab plate detail on any of them. If you really want to wear a pauldron with your TK, you're certainly free to do this at casual events like cons all you want (in fact, that's part of the fun). If you need to be canon, then the only way to do it with a clean TK is to go as a Heavy Weapons trooper, which is pretty much a clean TK in (as George Lucas is reported to have asked in the book) "marching order". supa troop Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 agree entirely with your post mate, but slighly off topic here if we are to consider that we follow screen time Troopers as cannon then surely this would include the Trooper without the Tube stripes after all he plays a significant part in capturing Leia and definately has quality screen time heck he even gets a close up Quote

The changes made to the design after filming in Tunisia was to improve the look. If you go with the logic that because he has screen time his look should be "canon" then so should a Boba Fett with his knees on upside down. Quote
pandatrooper[TK] Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Theres only 1 TD with no backpack, but i believe he still has sandy based armor, etc. Quote

Maybe Tube stripes are a sign of Higher Rank in the Forces, Mr No stripes could be just a raw recruit and by stunning Leia with his blaster leading to her capture he gained higher status and therefore got awarded his Imperial Standard Tube Stripes ..............
