I just ordered an ATA kit but I really want a smooth cap/back bucket, and the one that comes with the kit is bumpy. Should I sand it down and smooth it out or would it be easier or more advisable (given the plastic thickness) to replace the bumpy cap/back with smooth version from another armor "brand"? Would a cap/back from someoene else fit the faceplate OK? Any advice would be most helpful. Thanks!

if you sand it down with wet dry sandpaper and primer/paint it, the bumps shouldn't be very noticeable (if at all). also if you just replace the back, the parts may not fit correctly. most legitimate armor types differ in size and shape slightly

be sure to look through all the ATA build threads ;) it is a nice helmet when assembled and painted ;)

Having already experienced the sanding and filling of a TE2 I can tell you that it IS possible but it IS alot of work. I made a HERO bucket for Paul out of a TE2 a few years ago and I sanded, filled, primered, repeat, over and over and over again...

takes about 1 week per coat.

!!!!

1 week per coat? I know I'm impatient, but that's surprising. I typically go through the sand/paint cycle 3-4 times in a single night. I let the paint dry for around 30 minutes then wet sand and have at it again.
