I wanted to give some guidelines to improve the quality of the images used in the EIB profiles. Also, to ease the work of the combat photographers and speed up our work, so you'll have you profile image sooner.

For your EIB profile we'll need an action shot of yourself. Here you have some recommendations:

Size

Anything from 640 x 480 pixels upwards will do. Anything smaller will give us small margin and might be problematic to work with.

An ideal size will be anything bigger than 1MP (1280 x 960 pixels).

Try to take it with the best camera you have access to. The better the image, the better the result will be.

Save it in JPG format with a high to maximum setting (8 to 10). Use the "high quality" settings on the camera.

If you're proficient with Photoshop you can also use a PNG with an alpha mask.

Light

Try to take your pictures with good light. Direct sunlight is not good, as it gives hard edges. Using flash is also bad, as it creates too much contrast, colors turn out weird and will concentrate light on one point.

You can put yourself next to a window during the day to get a nice indirect lateral light, without the need to use flash or additional light sources. See the profile pictures for examples.

Background

Try to use a medium grey or red background. Too dark or too light backgrounds are problematic, as the white armor parts or the dark underarmor parts tend to blend with those backgrounds and we'll have to guess some of the parts and where to mask.

Red works best as there are no red parts in a stormtrooper armor, so any red cast can be easily taken off from the image.

Try to use a solid color background, or at least a consistent, simple one, as too noisy backgrounds are difficult to handle too.

Posture

You can pose in any way you want, but keep in mind that the images have a vertical orientation. Also, the decoration (borders, etc.) give us some costrains. Try not to cover your helmet with your blaster or hands. And try to be looking forward. But you can be as creative as you want. Again, you can look for examples in the existing EIB profiles.

Your own EIB request thread is where we usually take them from. :)

Quick question. I am going to take some better action shots but everywhere in the house seems too dark. I have some light blue plastic sheet to use behind me (I have searched but do not have any red or grey to use). Can I take the pics outside if I am not in direct sunlight?

Many thanks for any suggestions or help,

Rob.

i had similar issues with photo lighting, i used an old projector screen as a reflector for the sunlight :P . you could try outside. and as long as the background is a solid color you should be good.
