  1. Thanks everyone. I found the MMD White Putty (actually more grey) in a local hobby shop. It's made by a company called Squadron Products. It dries fairly quick and it is easy to sand. For mine I use 220, 320, then 600 grit sandpaper. With the 600 I wet the paper and it smooths out the putty really good. You can feather out the edges onto the plastic.

I've tried some of that stuff. Found it in a local hobby shop. They aren't kidding when they say "Harmful Vapors" on the front there. It's got a powerful smell. Definitely want to use in a ventilated area.

  2. Gloves!! I know it goes without saying, but still, it's important.

Go slow, test the gun on a spare strip of plastic first, so you can get the feel of it and how much heat it takes.

If possible, look for a heat gun that has a "Cool" setting, or have some kind of cool air or water source to help the plastic stay in the position you mold it to.

You don't need to crank the heat gun all the way up to high. Read the instructions and see what the temperatures your gun is capable of. Start low and work your way up.

  3. I'm building my suit right now. It's my first and it's an FX so I doubt that this will be up to Elite Standards, but I'm building in Elite in as many places as I can. I definitely will need to get a new bucket (my wife is already giving me the look when I mentioned the MR Bucket). I'm using the AB Buttons that came with the kit, but they have been sanded and painted to the correct colors. Canvas belt needs to be made. I've got to get something to close the side gaps.

  4. I'm pretty pleased with myself. I've got a nearly complete bucket, albeit it's an FX with no liner or mesh, but I no longer have to use my imagination. Just posting to get some feedback.

I do have plans to replace the brow trim, this is just a filler until I can get a better one, and I do still need to drill out the 4th hole in the frown.

  5. I'm thinking about making my own neck seal. Is there some sort of general consensus on how many ribs there are and what diameter the tubular ribbing material is?

While being far from the authority on much of anything, I would say that you shouldn't be so concerned about the number of ribs. Instead, I would say that you should go for a better look. My wife, who is the seamstress of the house, is making mine to get a better fit. We got some cording to make the "ribs" and it's approx. 3/16" of an inch wide and we're just going from the base of my neck to above the adam's apple.

  6. Try and find the original versions of ANH, ESB and ROTJ if you can. I hate the redone ones. I think you can only find those on LaserDisc and VHS, I don't think they have it on DVD. Also, show them in the order that they came out like it was meant.

The Original Versions are available on DVD, if you can find the single movie DVDs of the OT, NOT the box set. They are 2 disc versions, and the 2nd disc is the Theatrical version.

  7. I've thought about this too. An interesting way to do it is start with ANH, it just explains everything so well and is a good introduction. If you wanted to keep as many surprises as possible, you could then jump to TPM, explaining that we are going to find out about young Obi-wan and Luke's father "Anakin". Then going AOTC, ROTS, ANH (if they want) ESB and ROTJ. That is the best way I can think of to keep as many surprises as possible.

  8. Looking through the Elite Standards I noticed that they have been updated to say that the FX helmet is no longer acceptable. I agree with this, the FX helmet just has too many things that not accurate enough. However is the FX suit still acceptable?

I'm new to this and I bought an FX suit really before I knew any better. I do have plans to replace the helmet, but that could be a while. I'm trying for Elite Standards for everything from the neck down now and I just want to know where the rest of the suit sits for Elite Standards
